How big is your Prime

I have a 14mm f2.8 for wide and a 50mm f1.4 for low light. That's it, the rest is covered by zooms, which covers my needs just fine.

I do have one question tho, the 135mm prime I have (shown above and below) TBH I`m not really sure of the make, i`ve googled it but come up with nowt, anyone ever seen one of these before, It has a lens hood incorporated like on some other older primes ( like my Vivitar 200mm above)
Written on the lens ring is, SUPRA Multi- coated AD 1:2.8 f=135mm 52mm diam just to help, ????

Isnt it something like a Supra Magenta...(I think that IS the make)

Ah right, strange i did see that somewhere but i didnt think it was the make..

Thanks

one of the best primes I owned was the canon 300m 2.8 IS that i sold to StewartR as I needed to fund the 400 :(

35mm f2 ..This is my combat lens.. all boxing and the like shots..its a fantastic lens in low light or good light.. I also use for team pictures

85mm f1.8 ... Mostly indoor team sports like basketball.. the lights too low for my 70-200 and 85 is the optimum range for basketball

135mm f2 .. Am thinking the sharpest lens I have even at f2... fantastic.. used whenever 135 works :) the 70-200 2.8 mkII that i also own replaces this in most situations.. but iondoors.. the 135 is the dogs thingies..

400mm f2.8 is .. this is my most used lens.. all field sports....

35mm f1.8 (didn't like as it seems to miss focus a bit - even with the tweaking in camera)
50mm f1.4d (like this for low light stuff)
105mm f2.8 micro nikkor (macro/portrait)
50mm (lensbaby) f2 - f32 manually aperature disk
80mm Lensbaby Edge 80
300mm f4.5 tair m42 mount

Prefer the quality after processing the same as the zoomy lenses.

My three primes are:
  • AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED used for motor sports and Mach Loop mainly.
  • AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED used for macro work (obviously) and tried some portraiture with it too.
  • AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G used for portraiture and general where I want a good clean image.
... and I love them!

In the EOS range I have 50, 85, 100 macro, 135SF and 400 mm
The two zooms I have seem quite similar in quality where they overlap the primes and tbh the 70/200 with a 2x isnt really that far off the 400 at modest print size, pixel peeping is another matter. Wasnt like that in the late 70's when I started using film 35mm SLRs. Zooms were as said before slow, expensive, heavy and not as good quality image wise as a decent prime. A decent prime didnt cost a fortune either, 50 and 135 could be picked up quite reasonably, even manufacturers lenses werent too expensive.

2 and a 1/2 primes :D 300mm f4 (lightweight), 300mm f2.8, and 500mm f4 (heavyweight) all for aviation, motorsport or wildlife.

I have a 45mm for head-shot portraits, a 20mm pancake for general use when needing small kit, a 25mm for general use and a 14mm for filling a space in a drawer...

Some great lens people have got, its nice to know some people still use bigger primes other than the normal 50mm. would have liked to have seen some pictures though. Thanks all for your input. (y)

I currently have a 35mm, 50mm, and an 85mm. Love using all of them, and the image quality is fantastic...which is why I mainly use primes.

Were you wanting photos of prime lenses or taken with them? I ram sure that folk will be able to provide either.

Photos of the primes if poss.

50mm 1.4 - don't use it that often, but line it when I do.

100mm macro. Funnily enough I use this for macro shots.

135mm. Brilliant portrait lens and public walk around

300mm. Wildlife etc

35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 105mm VR.

DX user, cursing Nikon for not bringing out some proper wide crop primes...

This was the reason i ditched nikon in the end. just 3 primes from nikon in 15 years is a 'urine-extraction', especially considering only one is a mainstream lens.

My primes are :
- 35 mm 1.4 Sigma Art series used for newborns, portraits, group shots and landscape
- 85mm 1.8 Canon used for portraits. I haven't used it in about year, lens is boxed up as I was thinking about to sell it, but can't bring myself to do it :)
- 100mm Macro 2.8 non IS Canon - used for portraits and macro shoots.

I have primes at 4.5, 8, 10, 10.5, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 24, 28, 35, 45, 50, 65, 85, 90, 100, 105, 135, 150, 180, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800mm.
;)
... and now 23, 56, 58 and 60mm to add to that list.

My most commonly used prime focal lengths are 24mm (Nikon DX/crop) and 35mm (Nikon FX/full frame) although I also use the 18mm a lot on my Fuji XE2. Have primes 10.5/14/20/24/35/50/85 (recently sold a 300) (can mix Nikon DX/FX) and 18 and 27mm Fuji.

Fuji: Samyang 12mm f2 14mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, 60mm f2.4 Macro. Olympus: 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 100mm f2.8. Pentax: 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4. Konica: 40mm f2

Also owned 17mm f3.5, 58mm in f1.2 and f1.4 flavours, more 50mms, 28mm and 35mm in various apertures, an 85mm f1.4 and several 135mms.

I always like to have a decent wide angle of at least 24mm, a fast normal and something tele. I do most of my shooting using the ultra wide or the short tele, so on Fuji that's the 14mm and the 60mm, I will add a 56mm f1.2 eventually as I loved my old 85mm f1.4 on Full frame. I get least use out of the fast normals, but they are always a handy fallback for blurring stuff out with bokeh!

On EOS M/M3 I have the 22mm prime. Which is small and easy to carry. It's also easy to forget what you do with it, so I currently have no clue which camera bag it went into and will have to turf all my kit around to find it.

My EF primes are:

Samyang 8mm f/3.5 fisheye (APS-C only)
Samyang 14mm f/2.8
Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM (amazing little lens. My new favourite walkaround prime)
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 "Art"
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L II USM Macro

Beyond this I use the 70-200 zoom and an extender where necessary.

i got a couple but nothing special
40mm 2.8 pancake , 50mm 1.4 , 100mm 2.8 L macro and 300mm f4 L
i do like using primes when the occasion suits but tend to use zooms more just for the convenience

i really do like the 40mm 2.8 pancake it's a great lens for little money but looks tiny stuck on the front of a 1DX :)

I have the Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS prime which a superb little lens to carry around around, apart from that I only have 500mm f/4 Prime for me, Superb lens can't fault the beauty

Hi Graham I have a few some macro lenses, old and tatty Sigma 105 that's still very sharp but the autofocus doesn't work any more
Canon 100L and a sigma 150
I don't use the sigma 150 I find it tricky to hand hold
Also a Canon 300 2.8 mk 2 :)

Only got two primes, Samyang 12mm and fuji 35mm f1.4. Thinking of adding another but not sure what to go for.

I didn't realise I had so many! 8mm Samyang fisheye, antique 24mm Sigma, 30mm macro, 35mm, 50mm, Samyang 85mm manual, 135mm STF, 500mm AF reflex. Plus some antique incompatibles I only use with a reversing ring for macros. I use them on a 1.5 crop sensor body. Since getting the 35mm & 85mm I've pretty much stopped using the 50mm.

One of the primes I've liked the most is the Sigma 150mm 2.8, otherwise Canon 85mm 1.8 is my fav, I've had a Samyang it is 1.4 but quite soft for my taste wide open so you have to stop down really..

Here are my two. The 400 probably will not stay long as I am just using it for a holiday, as the 500 is a pain to travel with! I primarily do aviation with a bit of motorsport in the mix.

And a quick picture of non other than John Dibbs giving the 500 a bit of a road test this year, with me pulling the silly faces!

Canon 40mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 & Canon 100mmL macro
Have been thinking about a 85mm on the FF (maybe the sigma?)

Out of Interest where you get your logo done for your lens hood? Fancied getting one done for myself...
