HI

this might be a silly question but...

I want to take a picture of a barren road in the nevade desert with heat rising from the tarmac. How should the camera be set up to best achieve this.

I will want all the surrounding scene to be in focus, but the heat rising from the road will blur what ever is behind it.

Any one done a shot like this before? got any tips?

Only ever seen them, I'd think a very low camera angle would be best.

Mostly, if you can see it so will the camera. It should be just that simple, but you may want to try a variety of shutter speeds to see the difference but you should get something whatever the speed. :)

I'd go for low and slow
and probably wide as well

Low, slow and wide would probably be as good as anything but I doubt this was slow or wide and shows good heat haze.

Taken from buttkickers whoooosshhhh thread in the transport section.

I would think to catch heat haze you would need a reasonably fast shutter speed, otherwise you will just get a blur.

I can imagine the jet pumping out a much heavier heat haze than the road though =D

Simple.... unless it's a fast moving jet (or the like) go to somewhere hot, get down low, turn off AF, choose your focal point and shoot, with a medium to fast shutter-speed.

As has already been said, "If you can see it, so can the camera". Just need a few simple rules..... those above'll do it!

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies.

interesting point about the polariser, would that really help. Anyone tried ths type of shot?

It could do.... all depends where the sun is....! It will accentuate the blue of the sky so, thereby increasing any aerial contrast relative to the heat shimmer......

Make sure you post the picture as well

Not going to vegas untill late november, so this post will have vanished by then, I will make a new post and put some pics in it, assuming they come out well.

I am just in the planning phase, trying to work out lots of different types of shots before i get there and asking advise so as to maximise my chance of success.

Well, if it's planning you're doing..... don't do any practice shots in this country

sounds like a plan!

If you could leave any heat here please..... we could all do with it. Looks like November outside at the moment! ;)

last year i went to vegas in october and it rained for 3 days :(
fortunately i spent most of the time playing poker so it was not too bad, but this time i will be out and about, Area 51, Hoover damm, indian reservation(sky walk), and of course the Grand Canyon.

I am open to any suggestions for good shots, any one got any ideas? how do i best photograph some of the amazing hotels, so as to make the pics special
