Just sold my BMW M3, absolutely gutted to see it go, but it was just costing me too much money and I've realised that I really love photography so I want to spend more on some good equipment.

I currently have a 70-300 VR, but I'm looking to upgrade to 70-200 f2.8 VRII.

As a deal to myself to soften the blow, I told myself if I got near my asking price I'll treat myself, which I did. I'm dangerously close to buying it on PCWorld/Currys and getting it delivered in store for tomorrow evening.

Is this a good place to buy from? Should I buy elsewhere and stop being an impatient moron? Can't seem to see any other companies that are even relatively local, so it's pretty much that, Amazon, or the usual companies.

I'd rather not buy used, since the saving is only a couple of hundred quid, and for the sake of that I'd rather have the peace of mind that it's brand new.

Advice and help please! :(

Since you're buying rather than shopping, you might as well get it from wherever's most convenient. Not sure I'd want to get any advice from PCW/Currys WRT photography but they're usually there or there abouts price wise so why not? Make sure it's in a new box and isn't one they've had open (not sure Nikon tape their boxes shut but there are tell tale signs [eg nail marks on the tab, pulls where the tape's been detached on the bags etc]) for other customers.

erm just search online to see who has it in the uk/eu and see how much u save or not :)

Well, based on this:
http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nikon/Nikon-FX-Lenses/Nikon-AF-S-70-200mm-f2.8G-ED-VR-II-Lens

They're pretty much exactly the same price as the cheapest I can find anywhere online.

One thing though is that Jessops say there's a 2 year warranty included, however it's my understanding that this is provided by Nikon themselves and not Jessops, so I'd get it anywhere?

Based on this, I'd be getting from John Lewis over currys/pcw. Exactly same price and for me much better peace of mind ...

Alternatively, see if Jessops will price match if you have a store close by

I am having a dilema at the mo between a 24-70 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 and saw this on camera pricebuster earlier!

I had the 70-200 in the basket 1 click away from collection from my local PC world!:bang:

But not sure which of the 2 will most meet my needs so will start a thread and ask on here for peoples advice!

I would do it,I think collecting from a store is preferable to online(for me anyway) and when my local Jessops was open I used to pay a few extra quid for the privelage!

Could I ask why John Lewis over Currys/PCW? Genuine question, I know they're obviously highly regarded but is there anything in particular? For instance I know they used to offer a great warranty.

Sadly my local Jessops haven't re-opened, that was the first idea I had in mind but don't really fancy travelling all the way to get to the nearest one.

New with a nice saving. You could always send poor old me your now not used 70-300 haha

Don't think I would spend that sort of money with a private seller with dodgy feedback and a selection of "new" canon and nikon stuff sold in the last 6 months on ebay and not get it for 3 days!

Get it tomorrow from Currys and at least you have some comeback if there is a problem.

Heather

I have to echo this, I couldn't justify saving a little bit of money and potentially getting a screwed lens with no comeback whatsoever.

Thank you for looking though, I appreciate that.

When I bought that lens, I saved over €500 by buying from Holland - sadly I lost the bookmark of that site, somehow :/ So when I went to buy the 300mm f4, I couldn't find a better option than buying locally. AT least I have that comfort, if anything goes wrong ... I guess .. After the incident with the Sigma 35 1.4 [had to send it back to Wales, because it was off focus] I'm just a little overseas shy maybe.

But ... saving can be made, big savings, if you find a trustworthy store in the EU.

I'd choose John Lewis over PCW/Currys for customer service. JL has a far better rep for good customer service than any of the dixons store group.

Just went to go with it, but it's out of stock! :(

Thank you for the advice, I did a little bit of hunting on this but couldn't find any real bargains that made it worthwhile risking.

Cardiff camera center were offering this lens for £1300

£1649.99 now on their site. :(

Decided I'm going to try ringing a local camera company tomorrow (Cameraworld Chelmsford) to see if they can price match Currys/PCWorld to try and avoid using them. Their website states they will do what they can so hopefully that'll happen.

Hi Bill

for me, it's customer service and the after care you can get. The lens will be the same wherever you buy it from, but should you have any issues in the future, I personally would be much happier and feel I would get much better customer service from JL.

You can order online from Jessops / WEX - why not contact them and see if they will price match as JL are showing out of stock, alternatively, speal to JL customer service and see if they can order one / check stock in store for you ?

Bill, why not consider the Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 great lens at a good price, around £650, just a thought?

JL or Amazon any day of the week, PCWorld/Currys after sales is dire and if it does go wrong (unlikely) be prepared for it to be away at their service team for weeks and even after it comes back it probably will be worse than when it went away (and yes I do speak from bitter experience!!!)

Thank you for your response. I ended up calling JL to see what the score was, basically they said they had some in store in Oxford Street, London. I asked if there was any way they could be sent to another store and got told that's not possible. Debated going to London this evening for a short while but what with the weather as it is and thinking it's actually quite a lot of effort I decided not to.

A bit disappointed they can't just transfer it to another store, so didn't really fancy going out of my way to give them my hard-earned!

Ended up calling Jessops, they had one in store in Nottingham, told me that if I don't mind waiting til Wednesday they'll have it shipped out next day tomorrow. Price matched Curry's with no questions at all and very helpful and polite. First time using them and was really impressed with the service.

Hi mate,
Thanks for the recommendation, however I think I would sometimes use the VRII, having looked at these lenses for the last 6 months I had my heart set on the VRII. Sad, I know!

I also sometimes have to use the 70mm end, I could even do with it being a 50-200 at times!

Amazon are saying 1 to 2 months for stock I think!

Thanks for the tip on PCWorld/Currys though, hopefully Jessops are a lot better than them!
