Hotel breakfasts - Why do I do it?

Yes
My normal breakfast is toast and coffee, it's what I like and what I always have on a work day. So why is it that any time I stay in a hotel I have to pile a plate up with rubber eggs, plastic sausages, leather bacon...

This mornings effort was Scrambled eggs, sausage, tomato, bacon, beans, potato 'things' and haggis! followed by toast and jam with a pot of coffee.

There's a reason why I don't eat a big breakfast on a working day, all the blood runs from my brain to help with the digestion leaving me like a zombie for hours!

Can I just add a big thank you to the inventor of sat nav! Finished a course in Glasgow and heading home this morning, for a chap who drives on a motorway perhaps twice a year, 15~ miles of roadworks on the M73 combined with fog would have left me a quivering wreck without the nice little map and the calm voice telling me to keep left/right. Thank you sir, I owe you one pint!

Why? Because it's there. Because you're on holiday. Because it's good to do things on holiday that you don't normally do at home. I don't normally have breakfast at home but if I'm on holiday and there's breakfast supplied I'm gutted if I don't get to eat it.

And yes - I've just seen that you weren't on holiday. Still applies in my case though!

It's free, someone else cooked it and it tastes awesome!

I know what you mean. I really prefer fruit/yoghurt and tea or coffee, but I grew up in Scotland and sometimes fall foul of the heart attack special that passes for breakfast up here. It can go down quite well on a cold and damp morning though. Incidentally, the potato "things" were probably tattie scones and you left out the black pudding!

Innit funny how everywhere has it's own version of the "full" breakfast? There is the standard essentials, bacon, sausage, egg, beans or mushrooms. But then you get regional variations. English usually has hash browns n black pud, Scottish has haggis n tattie scones, Yorkshire has industrial strength black pud... The list goes on. I once had a "Heart attack" roll with bacon, egg, sausage (both link and sliced) black pud, haggis, tattie scone, hash browns, tomato ketchup(no beans, that would just be messy) all in a bloody big bun. Luvverly!

What happened to fried bread?
I thought Scots ate porridge anyway.
I have porridge (I'm not Scottish) every morning made with hot water and a scoop of whey protien powder, also add a few unsalted mixed nuts, various seeds and a dozen grapes.

That sounds horribly healthy and most certainly not within the spirit if what a good, stick to the ribs brekkie should be.

Tbh, I'm more of a caffein junkie and usually od on coffee of a morning.

No, they were like limp hash browns, I chose them over the tattie scones. And if any black pudding had been on offer you can bet it would have been piled on top too :)

When I'm on early shift, I'd have had a protein shake at around 04:00 am, the porridge gets eaten at around 06:00am following my gym workout.
I probably haven't eaten a full English breakfast in around 25 years if not more.:)

To add to the discussion regarding regional additions to a Fried Breackfast. When I was working in Ireland they had on offer both black & white pudding, white was pretty spicy if I remember rightly and very nice. Not seen or had it since though.

If you are staying in a hotel, whether for work or pleasure - you're on holiday!. Isn't the British ethos...when on holiday eat as much cr&p as you can, making sure to have more than enough of the fried bits, the continental/healthy stuff is just for decoration and for filling in the gaps - like a salad :D

Here in NI we have potato bread and soda bread with our 'Ulster Fry'. :D

If I'm on holiday in a hotel then yes, big breakfast. If I'm working and know I have to sit in a meeting for hours I probably would cut back a bit - I remember one time opting for smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and wheaten bread which was a nice change from a full cooked breakfast.

Have only had a cup of tea so far today... reading this I'm hungry now!

The 'Ulster fry' with soda bread is the tops! 20 years or so since I had it, but you've just jerked a very vivid memory:)

Used to love Little Chef's "Olympic" breakfasts:-

Orange juice
Bacon
2 eggs
Sausage
Tomatoes
Saute potatos
Black Pud (dropped latterly)
Buttered toast
Pot of tea.
Usually needed a sleep after that.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm egg and bacon with my eggs fresh from the hen house, nothing rubbery about them, just lovely and yellow, with the most fantastic flavour

I would eat it if it was cooked for me, that was after I had tried the porridge, fruit, youghurt, and anything else that was on offer, have to try it in case you miss something.:D

White pudding is pretty common in Scotland. Most butchers seem to sell it too.

When I worked outside for a living always had egg, bacon and chips, two slices of bread and butter with two mugs of tea in the caff every day for breakfast
Sometimes had a sausage as well or if I was feeling in need of a change bubble instead of chips and occasionally liver too.

Dread to think what my body would do with that lot these days though

Hotel breakfast's are mostly gash, only decent one I can remember is the one down in Newcastle but then I have a feeling I was still under the effects from the night before.

However I would take a breakfast from a hotel over one of these anyday of the week...

I really struggle to eat (especially on a morning) at the moment (but there is a reason - side effects of meds), but if I do it's usually cerial or fruit. If I'm travelling I always eat something, otherwise I feel travel sick sooner if I'm hungry.

Admittedly when I've made Full English Breakfasts, it's always been a brunch. No way could I eat that, then 2 more meals, no matter how small they were!

If someone stays over at my Mam's house, Mam usually makes a full English - and my brother who lives there, he loves it when someone stays over!

Porridge for me, with mashed bananas, sultanas and pecan nuts. Oh and sometimes shredded wheat instead. :)

Shredded wheat?! Bletch! That's the devils breakfast cereal. :(
I'm not usually one for eating in the morning. Come to think of it, I'm not usually one for morning full stop. If I have a big brekkie, I'll bypass lunch.

I love the big breakfast at Wetherspoons which is
2 eggs (i have them scrambled)
tomato
mushrooms
2 rashers of bacon
2 sausages
3 hash browns
and
4 slices of toast
I don't usually eat breakfast but its a nice treat :D

I have my Shredded Wheat in the evening, with grapes and made with whey protien drink instead of milk. In fact it's that time now.;):D
