Hot shoe problem

Yes
I think I've got a problem with my 350D in as much as any external flash I put on it, and whatever I try to do the flash gun will not fire. I've just spent a fair bit of dosh on the all singing all dancing Sigma EF500 DG Super Flashgun which uses ETTL II coz it says so on the box!!
I set every thing up with the 350D plus flash gun on my tripod and pluged in the cable release, setup my chosen shot and pressed the button the shutter fires but no flash, I checks the flash and yep I've switch it on coz there's a little red light glowing!!
I now ask the following questions
Have I got a knacked hot shoe on my 350D?
Is it worth getting fixed?
How much will it cost, as I think my warranty has expired?
I know the super doper Sigma flashgun works coz I put it on my 30D and was able to do most of what I wanted to do a part from the small apeture and long exsposure shots. The only way that I can get extra flash for my 350D is to bolt on a support arm for my slave flashgun not the best way but it works, having spent the dosh on the Sigma I was hoping it would work without any problems. I know I know I've got a 30D and why would I want to use my 350D instead of using my 30D? Well easy I've got a cable release for my 350D but I haven't ordered one for my 30D as I really didn't think I'd need to order one coz any indoor tripod work I intended to use my 350D, well that was my thinking behind it.
Any help, advice, words of inspired wisdom are all gratefully recieved as I'm totally confused.
Many thanks in advance

Does the internal flash fire on the 350D Davey?

I had a similar problem years ago with the camera not firing the flash, and it turned out to be burned out contacts on the shutter curtains (which complete the flash circuit so it fires in synch with the shutter) If the internal flash works then I'd think it works from the same shutter contacts, which would seem to rule out that possibility. It wasn't an expensive repair on that occasion as I recall. If not that, it could be a fault anywhere in the flash circuit?

CT,
Ta muchly for your reply.
As for your contacts idea not sure as far as I can see the contacts look to be in good order however what it's like underneath and inside the camera body is unknown and I'm not going to try and find for myself
The pop up flash works fine. That plus the bolt on slave flashgun unit I have, I can chuck out a goodly amount of the bright stuff. Which is ok but if I can I'd rather use one flashgun than two. I've had a look on Sigma's web site and found that the Sigma super dooper flashgun will work on the 300D so I'll test that out tonight just for some continuity in as much as if the super dooper flashgun works on both the 300D using E-TTL and it works on the 30D using E-TTL II. Then I think it's fair to say it's looking more like a camera problem than a flashgun problem
I've also checked on the Canon site and found the 1.0.3 update file so I'll run that on the 350D and see if that helps.
I know the flashgun works as I used it all day at the Goodwood Revival the other weekend on my 30D.
I know I could order a cable release for the 30D and be done with it but now that I've found a problem I want to fix it, I don't like work arounds. Plus if any members have a problem with their 350D's then they can read this thread which may help them out.

Seeing’s as how I’m having an extended tea break ;) thought I’d write down a few thoughts on this one.

Hot shoe works with slave unit and I assume with non super-duper flashgun?
Super-duper flashgun works on other camera.

This being the case we could surmise that both the super-duper flashgun and the hot shoe are both functioning.

Now, can the super-duper flashgun be used in a manual mode, no cleaver ettl’ing, this way you could rule out a software communications problem. If it still doesn’t want to light up yer life, are the contacts all in line. Holding the gun above the shoe then fitting it on to confirm the correct alignment of the unit.

Just some thoughts before I go back into a walk in deep freeze

Naffing firmware upgrade fixed it :bang: :bang: :bang:
:bonk: exits stage left head hung low in shame as not doing the firmware upgrade before posting thread and wasting everyones time :bonk:

Moral to this tale
1) Check for firmware upgrade
2) Install firmware

Still anyone with an old 350D with either 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 firmware you can get the latest upgrade 1.0.3 from the link below.

If youre in shooting mode, and press the Info button, I think it pops up on there IIRC.

Failing that, it should be on the menu.

It's on the menu on my 30D, It doubles as the firmware update option :) (Last option, last page)
