Hot Shoe Adapters and Flashes Noob

I know nothing about flashes other than that they flash, but I've been recently taking to photos of friends bands when i go out and I definitely need something better, the stock A350 flash isnt very good.

I want a flash which will is transferrable for the future and i was looking at hot shoe adapters and from I can tell, as well as allowing you to add extra equipment, they will allow me to mount a non-sony flash to my camera.. basically what im asking, if i get a hot shoe adapter for a Sony alpha will I be able to mount flashes from a Nikon or Canon?

Welcome to TP :)

Sony is different, as you have discovered. While different brands guns will probably fire, and nothing more, on different cameras (though Sony may well be different here too) they all have incompatible auto-TTL exposure control systems that won't work off-brand.

Most third party manufacturers produce Sony compatible guns, but they won't then work on a Nikon or Canon or whatever.
