hi all iam a complete novice and totally useless at anything to do with building a website. I found wix and have fumbled my way to coming close to an acceptable website. However I have purchased webhosting and a domain name through streamline.net . what im trying to do is post the website that was designed in wix to streamline and iam coming up complete blanks and would really appreciate and help and advice

thanks in advance :)

How did you design the one on wix? Did you write the code or upload anything, or was it from a website maker thing on wix?

it was the thing on the website their own builder, I dont know how to write a code or anything like that

Ooooo no! Dnt tell me you buy hosting from streamline.net? :( Everyone include myself are not happy customers after streamline are poorly service

If it is from their content generator, I doubt you will be able to port it else where. Do you have FTP access for it?

yeah i have the ftp details. im realising this everytime i want to get an answer i get someone in the philipeans

I think your right. as a total novice im trying to make a simple looking site but one that works too. are there any site builders that i can use?

i did download that but was unable to unzip the thing using win rar it confused me trying to set it up

well not having any spare cash it wont be an option for now. are there any that are free?

Yes. Wordpress is free. It takes time to understand how to configure it though.

There's also Joomla (even steeper learning curve), or various others. You could also code a template from CSS templates (www.freecsstemplates.org), but again, you'll need to have an understanding of HTML and CSS to not make a dogs dinner of it.

If you are still in a cooling off period with streamline, I strongly advice you take your money and run mate. Some of us have found TSOHost a great webhosting firm and their starter pack is £14.99 per year with a 30 days money back guarantee.

download winRAR - use that to extract the files

download Filezilla - thats a FTP client, you use it to log into your webspace to upload the extracted files

Go to your streamline control panel. Create a new database. There will be a username and password for it

in the same control panel there will be a ftp section - you need to know server details, username, password

in filezilla, create a new site profile (top left) add the FTP details from your control panel - log in, delete any holding pages

using filezilla (drag and drop into the webspace window) Upload the files + folder structure into your webspace (but not the main folder they are in)

using a browser navigate to your webspace (www. your domaiin .co.uk)

follow the instructions on the screen

(the database path will be "localhost")

Makesure you copy and paste the admin password into a note pad doc (and save it)

All this takes the time to make a coffee and settle down again

i have only had the account a week or so, how long is it before i can leave it? and can i take my domain name with me ?

thanks for the responses guys!!

Iam on a three month free trial so thankfully it wont cost to close which is a bonus. so which is the best place to go for being a host (streamline will be used for the domain name)

would be good to use someone with a good builder or if i can get wordpress setup it wont really matter but for ease a builder would help

After recommendations from people on here I've gone with TSOHost, so far they seem pretty good.

hosting a wordpress site on streamlinenet is quite straightforward.
printout the instructions from wordpress for installation.
Log into your control panel on streamlinenet and create a sql database, note the username and password. Then unzip and load up the wordpress stuff and follow their instructions, anything between 15 minutes and a couple of hours depending upon your current knowledge.
You might also need an easy FTP host, try FireFTP, it works from your browser. You only need this for your initial install if you're using wordpress. All your updates can be done in any browser from anywhere. Really a blog with a good looking template is the best way to set up a website, particularly if SEO is in your future.

Make sure you LET THEM KNOW you want to leave after three month trial, otherwise they keep you on contact for 2 years and money out of your bank straight away :rules:

Speaking from personal experience, I've been with Streamline for four years and, never had issues with them, they also have their own sitebuilder included but, I can't comment on that because I've never used it.

I dont have problem with them but Email system are really poor on Streamline. However, i managed get email / contact working after email to streamline 7 times!

I have all my emails routed through my pc email software, much better and, easier than the online option.
