Hose Reel

Id thought I'd like a hose reel where the short bit attaches to the tap, I then lift the hose reel up and carry it to where I need it. Trouble is then I'd have no usable hose bit would I? Id still need a fair few metres loose at my destination in order to walk around the car rinsing etc.

Basically I have a tap at the back and have to wash my car at the front and getting fed up with manually uncoiling, sorting out all the inevitable kinks then re coiling up again after. Anyone got any recommendations for a solution? I know I need 18m length or thereabouts

Thanks

I always used to wash my car myself until I moved and didn't have driveway as close to the house as I used to.

These days I go to the local hand car wash where they do a superb job for £6 and do it properly and thoroughly.

Depends how much you want to spend. An X-hose could be your solution. No kinks, check out You Tube for demo. Available Argos, B&Q etc. About £50 for 100ft.

Thanks but no good for me as I need to be able to put the hose down during washing, rinsing and that would just contract back around the back again each time.

Install a new outside tap where you want it (Somewhere discrete at the front of the house.) and "plumb" it in via a suitable length of hose that you can attach / remove at will. A bit like an extension lead.
Hmmm, I'id still have the problem uncoiling and connecting to the extension tap each time. I have to go past both my front and back door so couldn't leave it plumbed in all the time. Although getting a plumber round to put a proper tap in at the front somewhere could be a plan. I could then use a hose reel/trolley as designed both at front and rear.

Not for me I'm afraid. Reasons done to death on the car washing thread.

I bought one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B015PF9ANM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 a expandable hose mainly for the back garden veg plot, for the same kinking reasons, it's the bees knees for me, I had a hose reel attached to my back wall to store the old hose on which never kept the hose kink free, pulling it all out and rewinding was a PIA. The hose in the link above is the 15 mtr version, starts out around 5mtrs and expands to about 15 mtrs when you turn the water on, when you turn off supply it shrinks back to the original 5 mtrs. I leave mine a few loose wraps around the old hose reel when not in use, I'll probably put it in the shed over Winter..
There are longer versions available if you search but I'm not sure on performance due to the extra length. The one in the link had the best reviews as I read through a lot of them.

We have a Karcher version of the Hozelock - manual rewind - works very well for us

We've a hose lock real that's attached to the house and you just pull it out to the length you require, then as above, manually wind in.

No issues with kinks, up to recently (but it must be 10 + years old) and as you wind it back in, if there is a kink, you can easily see it and un-kink it. This is one of the reasons I'll keep the same manual system if / when I need to replace hose

As an addition I believe you can get guide rollers for the corner of your house that help feed the hose along sort of thing. One or two of those and a hose reel seems the way then.

Yes you can - think mine came with one in the kit - I tended not to use it though as you had to remove the hose gun for it to come through it and then feed it through it to extend it - I just use a strategically placed round flower pot now on the corner and pull it round this [emoji3]

I did look at one of the X hoses previously and tried one out, was impressed and didn't shrink back until you shut water off, cost prohibitive for the length I needed though at the moment - maybe if / when price drops ?

Been into detailing for eight years. Used the same hose - a hozelock hose pipe with reel: >this kind<. When I lived with my parents, the outside tap was on the kitchen extension and I cut about 2m hosepipe to connect from this tap to the reel. I then had the rest of the reel fully unwound and traipsed through the garage to the main road to wash the car. Now I have my own house, the reel is still in the backyard but has to pass through the utility room and side alley before it reaches the driveway. The same hose connects to my pressure washer.

If you have a long enough hose, you don't need to carry the reel to the front of the house. I think my hosepipe is 15m so 2m to the reel and 13m from reel to car. It's plenty enough to go round the whole car.

As for setting up and putting stuff away, if you wash your car regularly (I used to do mine weekly. It's now dropped to every two months because my pressure washer's broke), you can start and finish within an hour. Very easy to wind the hose up. Just need to make sure there's no water in the hosepipe.

Nope, it's been fine, I just pull out roughly what I need first and walk round to the front of the house with it. It rewinds easily enough too.
Sounds just what I need then. Thanks. How many screw does it need to bolt it to the wall? Fairly substantial ones as well I imagine.

Is that wall mounted or just sits on the floor? Thanks.

IIRC it came with fixings for wall mounting but I just sit it on the floor. The hosereel lives in the garage.

In fact, if you scroll to the bottom it tells you which comes with wall fixings.

I bought a hozelock ultimate hose last year. A 50m version. It is a bit expensive but I wished I bought one years ago. Never tangles or kinks. Absolute pleasure to use and unwind and wind on the reel.

Trouble is all the reels Ive looked at come with the hose already on it.

The original hose is usually decent. It's when you come to replace it that the trouble starts. The better ones have a double layer so they keep their shape and don't kink.

£90?!! Sod that for a game of soldiers. :runaway:;)

However they also do
http://www.screwfix.com/p/hozelock-2-in-1-reel-with-hose-25m/63087 not quite as tidy as the one omens linked to but may be ok. £35 all in, more my budgeted vicinity. 25m is more than adequate length wise. Would be nice to have 25m of ultimate hose on there but as boogie man says, the original should be ok.

You don't need the "ultimate" hose. Certainly mine is the original and has been fine all these years.

Both are the same. Just depends which style you prefer.
One doesn't need anything, but they are definitely not the same. You can easily feel the difference.

I'm going to run a length of hose from the outside tap to the front of the garage then use QR connectors to connect the shortish hose reel at the front (or the pressure washer). Got the roller guides around the conservatory's corners to ease the way at the moment . Might even go down the copper piping route for the outside hose run but with the hose connectors as termini. Will leave a decent fall as it passes through the garage so it drains down fully to avoid freezing problems.

Found one of these on offer in Sainsburys at the weekend so invested. £12.50 off £50. So only £2 or so dearer than amazon. Result. Also found the hozelock video on how to connect it all up a godsend. All done, screwed to the wall, jobs a good un and used a cut off section from my old hose to make the link from tap to drum.

I wonder if this post wiill make it onto the shortlist of "most exciting post of the day"? :D

I bought a plain hozelock hose for use with a sprinkler. I didn't need the fancy-pants system of a hosereel when all I needed was around 10m of hose. I originally just wound up the reel after use and dumped it in the shed. But it's a faff so I decided to look at empty hozelock reels for use with the hosepipe.

Frustratingly, I can buy a hozelock reel + hosepipe for cheaper than just a reel.
