Has anyone covered horse racing on here, i haven't and i'm down to cover a few days at York later this month.

My main concern is ettiquette around the course and area's you can and cannot go too. Having never been to a racecourse it will be completely alien to me.

exactly why i wanted to do some Andy.. I wouldnt take the job on not knowing anything about it (unless the person commisioning me knew that and said go anyway :) ) . bit like the tennis i did.. i just wanted to go to one to suss it out just in case... a training day sorta thing :)

I think a few people didnt get what i was after.. there are other sports i wouldnt mind doing just once... not for fun or to say i have.. but as a training exercise so i can take on jobs... its part of the job as far as i am concerned and would always do the first sport for free if i ahve to..in order to get that days training..

This is why i wanted to ask, there are other people i have asked too but thought there may be someone on here who has experience around racecourses.

have you asked ste (widnes) pretty sure he can help.. and i only just thought of this myself.

I photographed racing a lot in the past but only for fun. Access was so much easier back then and the Clerk of the Course would grant a pass if you turned up and asked. I preferred jump racing and would concentrate on the chase races where the horses go over the bigger fences. Horses tend to look strange when photographed going over a hurdle. Flat racing was the hardest to get an interesting picture because you have the running rail to contend with, I preferred corners to go in close on the action.

The pros would always concentrate on the winning post and shoot the finish. Then shots of the winner and jockey coming in and again in the winners enclosure. At that time sales were mainly to owners and the odd paper.

Not much help I know...:bonk:

I have done Haydock as a corporate commission so my main job spec was obviously branding boards in background. At Haydock there was no dos and donts apart from DONT USE FLASH, It scares the horses. Ok to use it for trophy presentations on the stand etc but not in winners circle where horses are.
