Do you love it or loathe it? Is it an amazing expression of photography as dramatic art or is it bordering on what might be perceived as abuse by some?

I just had a look at Joshua Hoffine's site and blog and his work certainly leaves an impression.

What do you think? http://joshuahoffine.com/

*shudder*

Didnt like some of those!

Great concept and shot though, and gets the desired effect.

I dont see it as abuse as long as everyone knows whats happening, ie, he doesnt just send a freaky clown in to a kids party then photograph the results.

Or rig a childs mother to have cockroaches pour out of her mouth while the child sleeps.

Reminds me of visit to mother-in-law last week

No, seriously agree with Curious.

Amazing tallent and I really like them from a P&P perspective.

Wouldn't hang one on my wall *** !!!!!!

I thought that was great, really interesting play on the horror theme.

Abuse? why think that? reading the About section it is clearly stated that it is all done for fun and it is friends and family that help out.

Looks like lots of fun making those images but some of the animals and things do look very "Stuffed"

Not too keen on the images on the link, (apart from #3) although i can imagine it being a very interesting genre that gives a lot of scope for creativity. I think you've raised a good point though as most the images i think of as 'horror photography' would be stills from movies (Pans Labyrinth springs to mind)

I use friends and family members, everyone works for free, we do it for fun.

Yet he charges up to $900 for a print ?

Can't get me head round that me.

I do like the pics though !! very clever stuff....

It will be interesting to get some female views on this.

It was a couple of female friends of my missus who went ape when they saw his work. The shot of the girl reflected in the mirror was the one that caused my ears a load of grief.

Here's a female view - I think they're wonderful - pictures of the stuff that was in my imagination as a kid (and I grew up watching hammer horror films which were nothing like as graphic). I think I'd have liked them even more when I was younger. Have to note at this stage that I'm possibly not a TYPICAL female.... like zombie films far too much for that!

Saying that the pic of the girl reflected in the mirror made me a little uneasy as she's just in pants, but I recognise that in Britain we've become SO paranoid about such photos that its probably just because it is unusual to see nowadays.

Yes, I thought it was all fairly amusing, apart from the semi dressed little girl... that was a touch too close to the mark and made me feel wrong for looking at it....

Like Wooshdemon, I too was brought up on Hammer horror so may have a fairly romanticised view of some things that others maybe uncomfortable with.
I thoroughly enjoy seeing this kind of work just as I love editorial & creative beauty shots.
Think the tightrope walker and the clown behind the washing-line are my faves.
Thanks for posting the link, bookmarked.

Excellent - another horror flick fan... Loved the clown myself - they're the scariest thing since.... ventriloquist dummies that move by themselves!!

Whatever Hammer house of horror didn't cover, Buffy the vampire slayer did!

Nothing wrong with those, some are really good! I dont really like the insects in mouths, but nothing really made me go :runaway:

:D

Thought the devil had no reflection????

isnt that a vampire? LOL really like some of them, looks like theres an amateur prop maker thing going on there too, the dead grey woman with the baby looks very good

I thought these were amazing!! A couple really freaked me out! very well done...

Love these! Some of the most creative work I've seen in a long time, what a talented guy. Thanks for posting the link.

Oh and I never even considered the little girl in the mirror as anything wrong until I read the posts about it. What a sad world we live in :(

Very very creative, and I love most of them. Unsettling but still lovely to look at! Just like me :)

I thought that, but couldn't string a bluddy sentence together that didn't make me sound as paranoid as them.

I knew as soon as I saw it, people would have something to say, but its just an image the same as any other on that site.

What if that girl were your daughter ? would you look at it a different way than you did ?

^^ thats not aimed at grendel, just a general question. ^^

Well I'm female and I think they're great... but then I'm a bit of a horror nut myself :cuckoo:

The only one I don't like is the take on Pennywise from IT... but that's more to do with my own fears than anything else.

Clowns truly are evil

I don't care about the horror aspect, not even that children were involved in it, I just care about that little girl in just a pair of knickers.

That is totally gratuitous, because the other shots show it as not being essential for the concept...

I hope the photographer doesn't live in the UK or he could be for the high jump...

however i am guessing many little girls only sleep i their knickers.... espec if the guys a yank... hot country and all im guessing even some grown women sleep just in their knickers/thong etc it isnt exactly a sexual pose or even intent i didnt feel

Yeah but some sick ****er will get a kick out of that....

I dont like kiddy fiddlers, if you had guessed :)

even so matty i dont think that was the togs idea. heres a nice thought for ya matt sayle i sleep in my boxers :D

OH NO. That is worse than the horror photography

I was just defending Desantnick's point. I dont have a problem with it but some one would get a kick out of it :(

I think there's probably enough there for the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to classify it as child porn and distribute net blocks to UK ISP's.... just like they did to Wikipedia recently over an image of a Scorpions album cover....

Seriously, this one is an incident waiting to happen....

not my cup of tea really - particularly didn't like the one with the baby in the arms of the dead thing :gag:

I love horror / thriller movies but the photography did nothing for me

if an incident happens it will only because of the publics paranoia

As someone who works in that area, trust me - that's not a risk.

Fantastic site with some truly amazing photographs. Love it!

As someone who sat in amazement at the whole Wikipedia/Scorpions debacle I can't help but see it kickin off again...

I thought they were great, only one I didnt like I have to agree with daysleeper is the bloody clown one. I watched IT at a far too young age and I hate clowns now and im 28!

stupid things

I'm not all that keen on the actual photos (I don't see what's that good about them) but I don't see them as "abuse".

I love horror photography, and am thinking of doing some myself soon! Just need some inspiration! x

talented. creative and very clever. would like to know how they are created. the shock effect certainly works. I can understand some views though about sickos seeing different themes but in the end they are simply art images. They have a desired effect - to shock. And just reading the threads on here theyve certainly done that.

Totally agreed, would love to know how they are done.
