No
We have noticed the swans living on the two lakes near our home have been dissapearing, we thought they were simply moving on or the RSPCA may be moving them but we heard something tonight which has put a chill up my spine and upset Eileen to tears.

We dont know if this is true but we have been told there are about 4 Polish immigrants going to the lake and taking the swans for food and as we cant prove this and dont want to start a hate thread (please keep it all civil as I know this will shock some of you) we just want to know if Polish people do treat swans as a food source as we are phoning the RSPCA to get the last remaining swan moved in the morning as its heartbreaking to see a one year old swan on his own when there were around 8 six months ago.

i feel sick! But no comments else i think i will start a riot

I'm not sure TBH
They do eat a lot of fish and I posted a
thread ages ago
about them ( this was well publicised and not hear say)
using nets to catch fish in the local river
and drowning the only otters that have appeared
in years.

I know they also use lines with multi hooks to catch fish
( I have seen them)
(illegal) and remove them for the "table" ( also illegal)
I guess that its possible that the swans may have met the same fate?

But of course so as not to appear racist I would suggest that
any race colour or creed could be fishing in this way

It wouldn't suprise me if it were true. But they probably are doing as they would have done in their home country and see nothing wrong with it.
I wonder if they prefer crow/rook or magpie as we seem to have had a major population explosion in these over the past couple of years.

Isn't it considered treason or something to kill a swan due to the fact that they are personally owned by the current monarch?

Or have I made that up?

Urban myth #257

These stories always follow an influx of immigrants.....

Remember all the cats and dogs in Chinese restaurants?

Hopefully the last swan will be there tomorrow and we will do our best to have him removed to safety as this does seem to be whats happening as the families who live very near to the lakes also cant find out where they have been dissapearing to

It was true, but I believe that they have been "de-regulated" quite recently due to the supposed increased numbers

The person who told Eileen this works with a couple of Polish workers and he said he had heard that they had been visiting during the night to get one for the table so we are taking no chances and reporting this in the morning

Perhaps you should talk to an actual real Polish person first before making assumptions. Amazingly, they are actually from this planet too. I know that might be hard to believe for some people.

Who-ever or what ever is scaring the "swans off"
(My monies on the giant pike that we have around here
that eats all the fish)

I guess its better to be safe than sorry Pete

As stated in my first post I dont know if its true its only what we have been told and we dont want to start any name calling or mudslinging we only want to get the last swan away from there for just incase there is some truth

My bets are on the swans getting ****ed off with the local wildlife togs.

I didn't know that. It was only unmarked Mute swans anyway, not all swans, and it only really applied to bits of the Thames in practical terms.

as recently as 2006 somebody was sentenced to a prison term for killing and eating a Swan.

Its only this last year I believe but then I was told this
by a police WLO (:D) I like to think he knows what he is talking about
but to be on the safe side I wouldn't eat one...................

they taste too much like red kite for my liking :D

( thats was tongue in cheek before the brown stuff hits the air-con)

They can fly:)

LOL i was gonna say the same thing.

But actually, I wonder why people dont eat swans normally? Obviously we arent allowed to kill them in this country which is part of the deal if youre going to eat it. We eat geese, turkey, pigeon, chicken etc so i wonder what swan meat is like?

I have just phoned the RSPCA for advice and was told the swans would not move to other areas at this time of year and they do suspect the swans are coming to some harm also they have had many reports of this and made lots of criminal court cases of the same subject, they have given me advice including calling the police as it is a criminal act to kill or harm a swan and also given me a number to call in the morning and the last swan will be removed to safety as a matter of urgency, the officer who I spoke to asked if he could record the phone call for them to contact the relevant services just in case I didnt call back for the swans welfare and have all the details on record so hopefully after tomorrow he will be taken to a safe lake

silly question, but was there a lot of feathers around where the swan might have been half inched? i'm guessing one of those nasty beggars wouldnt have gone quietly.

We did actually notice last weekend that there was a spot with lots of feathers but nothing else close to the shoreline on the grass but we put this down to maybe a fox if a fox was brave enough:shrug:

Any bits of Pole? Not sure I'd fancy trying to manhandle a swan....

Thats interesting
( if true) there used to be ( quite recently) 2 pair on a large local lake
that I take the dogs for their daily run around.

Not seen then for a couple or so weeks ( the swans not the dogs)
it must be the monster pike that are in there taking them.

I doubt that it would be the camping east Europeans that seem to spend the
week-ends there fishing and Bar-B-que-ing
