Need some advice. The missus and I will be getting married next year in April. Looking at honeymoon destinations as we need to brainstorm. Neither of us have travelled much due to careers. I've always loved the idea of going to the Maldives, whereas the missus would like anywhere in the Indian Ocean (or maybe Bora Bora!).

We've both figured two weeks of lying on the beach might get a bit boring so we're looking at maybe week 1 somewhere perhaps a bit more touristy (but still allows time together) and week 2 in the Indian Ocean.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome.

EDIT: My sister did a week in Sri Lanka and a week in Kuramathi (Maldives - nicked my idea!). Keen to avoid the exact same holiday.

To make my life easier, I'm gonna post all relevant suggestions here:

Maldives: Kuredu
Other locations: Sri Lanka, Dubai, Hawaii, Azores, Morea, Rarotonga

The Maldives are IN the Indian ocean!

I know that. As are madagascar, mauritius and seychelles. Missus doesn't mind anywhere in the indian ocean, whereas i specifically want maldives.

Its not the first place to think of, but Germany has some beautiful sights I can recommend from my honeymoon last year. If you go to the south you have the Black Forest with the Triberg waterfalls, near the Austrian border is the famous Neuschwanstein castle and plenty more well worth seeing... Its not your usual beach holiday but its packed full of wonderful sights, good food and plenty of things to do if you do a little research. Loads of things to photograph.... Might not float your boat but perhaps worth a look, if not for another time perhaps.

Maldives are without a doubt beautiful, but my colleague has just returned from a holiday there, and she is of the opinion that unless you are a scuba diver, there's absolutely nothing to do.

I've been to the Maldives 3 times - each time going to Kuredu. We go there as its one of the bigger islands with a little bit more going on than a lot of the smaller islands (small amount of 'nightlife', sunset cruises, watersports, pitch and putt golf), which are just dive, eat, sunbathe. Even as one of the larger islands, you can walk round it in about an hour, but it is a very good compromise if you can't handle doing not a lot for a week.

Choosing your island wisely is paramount in the Maldives, you really need to decide exactly what you want then search accordingly. Often you have to wait a while at the airport in the return - if so it's a 10 minute boat ride to see the capital Male

Sri Lanka would have been my choice for a combo holiday, so don't rule it out just yet - anywhere else may involve longer connecting flights than you want, if that's not a problem, maybe consider somewhere like Dubai for the other week.

Germany is an interesting choice. Might not fit in with travel plans though.

Scuba diving - I'm not a diver but would be happy to give it a go. I'd prefer a Maldivian island that has more to feature.

Mike - who did you use to arrange the trips? Cost? Any hints/tips (esp if not obvious by googling) on the Maldives would be useful.

In the past we used first choice, but their prices have shot up so last time we used 'letsgo2'. Using them was very different to a normal high street travel agent and I'll admit to being a little nervous as I'd never heard of them before, but they got it 100% spot on fr us, so I would use them again.

Obviously, check the weather seasons, the maldives have 2 seasons, or 'monsoons' as they call them. A quick google with your intended dates should give you the answers you need.

As much as I love the island, I don't always recommend Kuredu as it has gone just a little bit too commercial as opposed to some of the 'no shoes, no news' islands, but by what you've written it may be good for you. www.kuredu.com is their site, but possibly doesn't sell it well enough. You get there via a 40 minute seaplane ride which is just awesome!

You'd have to check the costs yourselves, but using Kuredu as a guide it's all-inclusive, you may just need to pay for some excursions if you want them, and there are a couple of extra restaurants which you can pay for if you want (the Italian, Francos is superb and a pizza is about £12).

Not too many hints and tips required for the Maldives really other than pack lightly (one pair of shoes max!), and take your watch off - they really are that laid back

Cool. I'll check it out.

Where did everyone else go on their honeymoons? Or even holidays that they'd recommend for honeymoons?

Best holiday ever (and not honeymoon)......Road Trip. West coast of the USA from Seattle to San Diego. Not one nights acommodation was prebooked. Fabulous.

Well, our honeymoon was a little different in that we'd been a couple for 20+ years so just had our normal summer holiday a few weeks after we got married. Traditionally, a honeymoon was spent making the firstborn, so beaches etc weren't a priority like the are now!

Might go to the Seychelles at some point to chase up some family history there but in no great hurry, although they might sink...

Start how you intend to carry on. Stay at home and buy that lens you always wanted.:D
/dashes for cover....

Not keen on the idea of a road trip. We have thought about America but unsure.

Duncan - I want a 70-200 F4 IS - not massively expensive.

I was recently best man at my mates wedding and they went off to the Maldives. They said it was one of the best trips they have ever done and that's not because it was their honeymoon. They stayed in a hut on stilts in the water and you could literally walk out the door and into the ocean for your morning shower.

If the Maldives is something you're interested in I could ask them for some more details.

Yes please. At this stage the more info we have, the better we can make decisions. Main info would be where they stayed, who they organised it through, a rough idea of cost, and any recommendations/advice.

We've just booked our honeymoon. We started looking at the Seychelles but came to the conclusion it was lot to pay for a beach holiday. Not that we thought it was too expensive for what it was, but we thought we'd be able to experience more for our money. Trying to get more of an experience for our money we then looked at a tour of Sri Lanka. This looked amazing but on thinking about it we decided it was going to be a bit too hectic after months of wedding preparations. So finally we've settled on a week in Italy, simple, romantic and hopefully relaxing... .....together.

Hopefully we'll then put the money we've saved by going to Italy towards a more adventurous (for us anyway) holiday next year. That way we can pick the best time to suit the location we want to go to, we'll have more time to prepare and get the most from it and we'll have more energy when we get there.

I'll be seeing him tomorrow so I'll get him to write some stuff down and I'll post some pictures up.

We went to the Maldives a few years ago,
it was a small Island with a long name, I have however forgotten the name, as it was pretty unpronounceable.
b****r all to do, except dive / snorkel (take your own fins mask etc) eat drink, and repeat the following day.
It was brilliant!

Some are more commercially orientated though, with other water-sports available.
Make sure you go all inclusive food and drink can be very expensive.

If you do go there, mention you are a honeymoon couple,
there were a "few" there when we were.

They just go a little further with little touches.
Nothing outrageous, and I will say no more.
(Unless you really want to know.)

As mentioned already, shirt and tie for dinner
Really? no, not at all. We spent the entire time bare-foot.
The restaurant floor was sand, as was the bar.

USA is my recommendation you can have any type of holiday there

We did LA and Hawaii.

On another note, I know of three different couples who have honeymooned in the "up and coming" tourist destination of the Cape Verde islands.
All have said that up and coming is a bit strong, and all would avoid like the plague in the foreseeable future.

Just saw on the news this morning, the average wedding in the UK costs £21000. If I was getting married I would be tempted to get married abroad, and I would treat it as the honeymoon also.

My wedding cost USD 120.00

A cruise could be a good idea for a honeymoon as it's fairly relaxing yet you get a bit of variety as it stops at different ports. I did a cruise a few years ago which was very good. I'd avoid one of those mega ships with 1000's of passengers - I think there were about 350 on the cruise I did.

I best not tell the girlfriend that one then as she keeps pestering me to get married. I keep referring to her as the other half, or even the missus, even though we are not married :)

That's enough surely? Honestl,y some people are so ungrateful!
What does she want a bloody ring or something?
:D

This is an Indian wedding. 500 guests. Projected total cost so far £30-35k.

Things are just great the way they are, been together for years so not going to spoil it ;)

She really does like the idea of being a Princess for a day, whenever there is anything to do with wedding on TV,I can see her going all gooey and emotional

Ok it's a long way to go but IMO you will not find two more beautiful islands in the world. We went to Morea (French Polynesia) and Rarotonga (Cook Islands) on a round the world trip a few years ago.

On Morea we stayed at the Sofitel resort in an overwater bungalow

In the very bottom right hand corner of this photo you can see a glass top coffee table, the lid hinges up and you can drop through it onto the coral reef below. The reef is floodlit at night by lights under your bungalow.

Raratonga is the most laid back place ever. Crime is virtually unknown. The rule on drink driving is this... the police would rather you didn't drink and drive, so if you think you can't drive back to your hotel safely, leave your car at the police station and they will drive you back to your hotel. Paradise!

Well worth a thought.

The Maldives offer stunning diving, but they're not the easiest dice location in the world. Think fast descents through strong currents and the possibility of missing the reef altogether if you ain't fast enough. I think to learn I'd try elsewhere

There are always "dangers" when diving.
But I'd certainly say that wasn't my experience.
Having said that of course, there is plenty to see, just snorkelling, from the shore, inside the "reef barrier"
As I always say you don't have to go dozens of meters to enjoy a good dive, there is plenty to see @<10 :)

Yep, but it wasn't really about the dangers, more then the difficulties. They're stunning diving, but to learn to dive you'll have a much easier time of it in the Red Sea or the Caribbean (they're not honeymoon suggestions, just if you want to learn to dive). Lots of the best diving out there is because of the currents that sweep the islands, which of course also cause the challenges

I agree completely, I meant only inasmuch, for "something to do on honeymoon" ( :D )
As in a one off, rather than take your "PADI"

so it takes to post 29 to "out it"..... no probs, go for it

I had to wait a while for my honeymoon but we went to Cuba... fantastic place stayed in Havana for 3 days and then at a beach resort for the following 11 but plenty to do outside of the resort.

What needed outing?

bad choice of wording on my part... however, if you had said earlier on, may have got some more favourable answers?
