No I don't judge a person by the brand or model of their camera but what does make me cringe a bit is when someone has a D/SLR and shoots away in auto with the on-board flash popping up. I know I shouldn't ... but I do :/

Whats wrong with Nikon ????

How are Nikon users judged?

I don't judge a photographer on their camera, but I would stop and stare if they where using medium or large format.

I don't understand why people list what they have - it seems a little like showing off, and only shows how much people have spent, and nothing at all about the quality of the pictures taken..
When I first joined photography forums, I used to wonder why people list their equipment. I thought it was a bit show-off as well.

I'm sure for some people there is an element of show-off to it. However, over time I have come to appreciate that there are a couple of practical aspects to it too.

This is one of them:
I only list my kit so when i post a picture for people to look at they can see what i have used and they may be interested in buying a lens or something and can see what results i am getting with it and what others are getting from it, just gives you an idea of what the kit does. Obviously other people will do better with the same kit but it all helps.

Another is that if somebody posts a photo for critique, then knowing what equipment they had available to them can help suggest (or rule out) other options they might have had in taking the shot.

And another is that if somebody is giving advice on equipment, it can help to know what they have themselves, so you can judge whether they are likely to be talking from experience or just repeating what they've heard elsewhere.

:agree: Thats why I have mine listed, not to "show off" or anything like that... :)

also... stewart, please don't list all of your equipment ;)

I would never show off, seriously. I mean only last week whilst I was driving home in my bright orange topless sports car, I was stopped at a set of lights by the local bobby. The guy lectured me on the loud exhaust and noisy music. he made me late to the point that when I got in, the missus had already left the hot tub and preceeded to Eastenders :)

Show offs are fools!

Gary.

I agree with most!
Its def the 'eye' for it that matters more.

My friend shoots with a polaroid, and he produces the most amazing art, it really is breath taking.
Just goes to show really.

What, you mean something like this?

EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 | EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II | EF 17-40mm f/4 L | EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS | EF 24mm f/1.4 L | TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L | EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L | EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS | EF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 L IS | EF 35mm f/1.4 L | EF 50mm f/1.2 L | EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS | EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L | EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS | EF 85mm f/1.2 L II | EF 85mm f/1.8 | EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro | EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS | Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 APO EX DG | EF 135mm f/2 L | EF 200mm f/1.8 L | EF 200mm f/2.8 L II / EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS | EF 300mm f/4 L IS | EF 400mm f/5.6 L | EF 500mm f/4 L IS | EF Extender 1.4x II | EF Extender 2x II

OK, I won't. ;)

I have found it really useful seeing what equipment people use in order to get an idea of what lenses to buy for myself and what suits the photos i like to take. It's great to see what people can do with each bit of kit. This can also be done with exif as stated earlier. I've also had people ask what lens I use for shots which is why I created my sig.

I completely agree which the idea that the the skill lies with the user and not the tool! In fact sometimes I love seeing what people can do with limited set ups, there was a post on lomography on here a while back and it was interesting to see some of that stuff.
