Do you judge people on what camera they use?

For example: if you see in someones signature that they use a an entry level camera like a 400D.... do you think nooby or does it not matter what ever camera they use.

I know this is an odd question but I feel it is an interesting one.

I often dont read sigs, only time I am interested in what camera took the shot if it looks odd, either pixelated or odd ghosting or something and I am looking for a reason why it might looks like that.
 
No, but then again i use Olympus Equipment despite what people think :D

There is always going to be a bit of brand snobbery, but its the pictures that count.

I think its good to see users equipment listed in their signature. On more than one occaision i have PM's people asking about certain things based on what is listed in their sig.
 
I can produce better pictures with an ixus than i'm managing with the 5d.

so to me, it's a case of all the gear and no idea :(

No, I think its really just a jealousy thing most of the time here on TP, just all them Nikon users wishing they had Canons... :p

I am proud of having an entry level camera myself, and anybody who has made the effort to actually buy a camera even if its a £3 dispoble because they have a interest in photography should not feel judged.

David makes a good point. There are some people out there creating fantastic photography with all sorts of point and shoots and instamatic cameras. I think the main thing is understanding how to see a great photo opportunity, regardless of what camera you are using. That's how I feel anyway.

No not at all I look at the result not the tools
I only skip though signatures that include "kit"
and read the funny ones, though there was one
one time that said something about "Nikon"
that gave me a
real laugh :lol:

No. Like everyone else says I look at the shots and then crit them.
We all start somewhere and then most of us buy more than we know what to do with or can carry. Interesting to see who's got *** ***
 
I sometimes think "hmmm thats a bad pic for the quality of the gear" and then again sometimes I think "wow...I dont do my 1D justice!"

So yes, I sometimes do judge....both good and bad though!
 
I do sometimes wonder why people feel the need to display a vast total spend on gear in a sig. It doesn't affect how I view a pic at all though.

Gear really doesn't make alot of difference on the internet. There would be so little difference between a bad shot from a 40MP 16 bit digi back and a good shot from my phone in a 600 pixel jpeg it's daft to even try and get a feel for the potential quality of ant setup on here.

Photography is art and should always be at least 95% vision and at most 5% kit.
 
I too some times look at the camera/gear if the picture is bad to see what is used to make it that bad. :D
I some times ask what gear they use because the shot looks good and I wonder what has aided them to make the picture that good/clear. :thumbs:
Now I dont judge people when I see them carrying gear round their necks in the street. :nono:
Many many years ago I might have thought oh I have a better camera than them, but I swiftly found out its in the eye of the user & how you use them. :naughty:
But I do find people judge you on oh you have a good camera therefore it takes good photos.... :bang:
 
Take no notice of what cameras other people use. Having a quality camera is one thing, being able to use it to its full potential is another.
A good photographer will compose and take a good shot with a simple compact (or even a disposable camera), the same good photographer should ahcieve greater results with a quality camera.
One other point, it depends what you take photos of. For quality portraits, the Fuji DSLR is great, I believe Pentax is good for moving shots, I have a 400D and I like macro shots and it serves me well (at least I think it does).
 
Reading Gibbos reply reminds me years ago some one commented that a photograph I had taken was really good, to which my wife replied, "He's got a good camera".
Not long after that we had some friends round for tea and they commented on how good the meal was. to which I replied "we have a good oven".
I think I deserve a medal for bravery!

You probably deserve two but we both know they wouldn't do you any good. ;)

I'll keep saying it until they put me back in my box, photography is ALL about vision and passion. With these any camera is great. Without, all the kit in the world wont help one bit.

Nope, not really. I only list my gear in my sig so people can make suggestions easier on what I could do to improve any shots I put up (not that they do, people seem to be afraid of replying in my threads :D).
My uni lecturer did a lecture last week (funnily enough) that included some great moments in street scenes, and shots from airshows.. then he told us they were all taken on his mobile phone camera with a 1.5 second shutter lag.. pretty impressive. On the other hand there are people who started the course with a D300 and don't know what Av or Tv is. :shrug:

Edit: I suppose you could say they don't need to know what Av or Tv are to take great pics..

I dont list my gear
1. its irrelivent
2. the page isn't big enough to list all the junk I don't need or know how to use.

I don't judge gear lists either, other than to note how much they have spent with a view to adding them to my Nigerian email scam list:)
Top gear can help you in some technical circumstances, like freeze frame sports action, but chances are its just papering over cracks, ingenuity and barefaced talent is always worth more.
 
Other than size and weight my upgrade from the 400D to 40D (for me personally) has been nothing but pointless. I am actually considering getting a refund and going back. 400D with a grip, for me, is just as good for my macro and odd wildlife pic and a fraction of the price.

So what im saying in a nut shell is....a more expensive camera is probably 1) Down to profession/type of photography requirements. 2) If you have the spare cash then why not upgrade.

Other than that I guess if im getting good results I dont need my kit bag to look more "bling"

:D JOKE!! WHY would you judge anyone by the camera the use? A D40x user can produce infinately superior pics to a D3 user, jyust by having a better 'eye' - but ultimately it doesnt matter what gear is in the bag, what pics you produce, because 99% of people are here because they love photography, whether they are good, bad or indifferent, and THATS what matters! ;)
 
no dont think camera makes to much difference, think lenses do & eye for shot, right place right time. I like taking pics, i also concentrate more on subjects even if its museum, scenery, shows etc i still take badly but cant win them all lol
 
I don't understand why people list what they have - it seems a little like showing off, and only shows how much people have spent, and nothing at all about the quality of the pictures taken..
 
I think it's only human to be impressed by seeing big or expensive kit being used but it always makes me want to see their results. I never read the signatures with kit listed because other than a passing interest the photo they post might have been taken with something else e.g. Marcel's recent phone camera posts in his 365 thread.

Personally I would rather have a witty comment or a pithy saying in my signature, and if I ever have the wit or pith I might sit down for an hour and see if I can come up with one.
 
Lifes too short to judge people on kit. I'm more likely to judge on ability or attitude towards others. Good manners cost nothing.
This is one of the nicest tog forums around. There are some out there that have togs that are so far up their own $*%es that they haven't seen daylight for years.
If someone chooses to invest heavily in their hobby, good luck to them. If it somehow helps their learning ability, even better.
The opening question is a very interesting one though and if it does one thing, maybe it makes us look at ourselves rather than other peoples kit. In doing that maybe the judgemental type will think twice before labelling people for their kit.
 
Personally, I try not to judge.

As a (slight) aside, I'm in the midst of starting a photography group at work and one of the big concerns of a lot of folk who wanted to join was that it would be some kind of snobbish club where only those with expensive kit would be welcome.

We've very deliberately set out our stall early and said that we don't care if people are using a 1Ds MkIII or a 2mp Camera phone, its about the love of producing images and learning about how to do it better that matters.

I should add that I'm really only getting it started, as anyone who's seen the few images I've posted on here will be able to attest, I'm not really one to be giving huge amounts of advice !! ;)

I don't judge them by the camera, after all it the ability to take a good photo that is paramount, I use a 10d 20d and 5d and I don't feel the need to move "up" just to have the latest and greatest, I much prefer to utilise the skills I have and find the limits of the camera and it's functions. I know my menu''s back to front and how to operate any of my camera's. It's then up to me to compose the image and extract the best from the camera:thumbs:

Personally I take no notice at all. It's the image that counts in the end.

The only reason I list my kit in my sig is that I have lost count of the number of times I've been asked what kit I was using to take a shot. My sig gives most people a pretty good idea.

However, when walking down the street, is sometimes look with envy at the kit others have slung around their necks and, occasionally, I get envious looks back...

Is that sad?

I admire anyone who gets the best of out their camera be it 300D or 1DS Mk III / Hasselblad digital

I'm somewhat surprised by the rich flash gits who have all the gear, yet produce pictures that look as it they come from mobile phones.
 
I often look at "kit lists" when I see an excellent picture, and find it interesting to note that a number of users with the 350/400D can produce much better images than me.

So I think to myself "I can do better" and "You don't need a new body", you just need more practice with what you've got.

On saying that, I do notice the clarity and sharpness that a full frame and L glass seem to produce. However, many people using this type of kit have been taking photos for a long time and have the experience, so it's not just the kit.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that identifying and taking a decent shot is down to the tog, but decent kit can help that "good" shot look great.

Edit: Some of my better shots have been taken on my Olympus C5050Z "bridge" camera rather than my 350D

My point being that a good shot on a full frame sensor and "L" glass has a better "quality" look than a crop sensor & kit lens. The shot has to be good to start with, the better quality kit offers (IMPO) better colour richness and added sharpness, before any PP work.
