Hi i am thinking about settting up home studio to doing portrails and was intersting in what people would recommend. i am going to get a few backdrops to use but wanted help working out what sort of lighting to use and what works well on a budget.

How large a space do you have?
What type of portraits do you want to produce?
Do you have any ideas on budget

I am going to be using a room about 10feet by 8 feet, mostly taking pictures of individuals and have a budget off about 500 quid, i am using a canon os 50d, 430dx11 flash.

what is the hight of the room, normaly in a house hight is the problem for lighting anything properly. the room might be abit small as well.

TBH you're going to struggle to get any kind of creative lighting effects in this amount of space.

I strongly advise you to paint the entire room matt black, to prevented unwanted light from bouncing off the walls and ceiling and stopping you from controlling the light. If you can't do that, then at least paint the ceiling black, use black cloth to cover the walls and provide control.

Any good quality 2-head flash kit will do the job. This one is well within your budget

Take a look at the various free guides (see under 'More free downloads' on my Photolearn website

Sure Gary - just spotted that those two links were a tad lower down in the google search list. I did an "I'm feeling lucky"... :)

If I heard right theflashcentre will be doing a xmas kit on the dlite 1 dlite 2 and 1 dlite 4 head I think with brollies rather than boxes and stands etc for £349 so it might be worth keeping an eye out.

garry, what softboxes etc do you use in your studio?

I've got a few different ones, used for different purposes.
A Chinese 1.5 Metre octagonal one, bought from Walser.de (the one I used in my comparison test with the Chimera medium)
a Chimera medium (4'x3') with white interior and another with silver interior
Large & medium Lencarta octagonal folding softboxes, medium Lencarta folding softbox rectangular, a few smaller ones, mainly around 3' x 2', a 1x1 metre sq which I think is Elinchrom, an unknown Chinese brand which I think is about 3 1/2 x 2 1/2.

Being bone idle most of them are attached to lamp heads - it's easier to change a head than change a softbox;)

I saw a good tip for changing large softbox's put the softbox face down and put the head into the softbox, hold it above push it in twist then pick up the head with the box attached.

Yes, that's the best way to do it.

But if you have a lot of flash heads, a large studio and if you're bone idle it's quicker just to change flash heads...
