I've been asked several times in the last few days what I use for lighting. My home setup is fairly basic and rudimentary but it does the job for the most part. As such, I thought I'd post a few photos which might help beginners wanting to set up something similar at home.

I use an old Ikea table as the base. In the left corner is an old Nikon copy stand that I've rarely used but recently re-attached with the thought of using it for some of the more extreme macro stuff I'm currently learning. I have 5 x 5500k cheap "studio" lights in differing sizes that I've picked up cheaply on eBay over the years.

I generally use A4 pieces of paper to diffuse the lights. The camera sits on a Velbon SuperMag Slider for most of my shots. It helps when fine tuning focus and framing and also helps focus lenses that cannot be focused in any other way (microscope or enlarger lenses, for example).

The 3 sided diffuser you see in the above and below image is a piece of frosted perspex that I had a manufacturer make for me. They simply took a single piece and bent it twice. Cheap as chips and very useful for creating good even light.

I have another much larger perspex light box that I had made for me, too. That one comes to pieces for storage but when up stands about 70cm x 70cm is is 5 sided. I might put that one back together later and if I do I'll post a pic. Hope this might helps someone put together a cheap but functional home studio for macro and product type photography.

OK, I've now put up my main custom light box which I've not had up for a while as we were storing some stuff in the conservatory and I just didn't have space to set this all up properly. This large light box really is the Rolls Royce of light diffusion for me. I've had tents of varying sizes and colours but none have come close to the evenly diffused light that this one produces.

If I need extra diffusion I can pop the smaller one inside as shown in the pictures. I'm actually really glad I posted this thread as it motivated me to get the large box back up and I shall enjoy using it again in the coming days. This was again made for me by a manufacturer after I emailed them a design diagram that I'd had in my head for a while. I needed to be able to collapse it now and again and store it easily without taking up much space and it actually works perfectly. You do have to be carefully when erecting and dissembling as it's all made from 3mm perspex but once it's up it's worth the fiddle. I use some empty business card containers underneath the base piece to provide strength and remove that pressure from the joints. You can just make them out in the image above but because they're transparent they cannot be seen from above. This box cost me about £50 shipped, as I recall. The internal dimensions are 60x60cm.

Please Duncan, tell me more about your report stand! :-)

I must say Dunc, that's a great little setup. I don't shoot macro myself but it's great to see home setups. I struggle with my home studio with limited size but do enjoy the results from limited gear and space.

Daniel, I don't know too much about it, TBH. It's a Nikon PFT-2 Copy Stand that I snagged on eBay for peanuts a few years ago. I didn't use it and eventually it was confined to my loft. I've just got it back out and attached it to my work table with the intention of using it with some of my microscope lenses. I'll report in with the results when I do use it, though.

Thanks Kris. I really enjoy this kind of photography but like you I struggle for space. I want to move us to a larger house in the next few years but for now I'll have to make do with a few square feet in the conservatory! It's fun, though. I like putting together low cost stuff and it's great to be able to design some of your own stuff, even if sometimes it doesn't quite work how you expected. This light box was one of the things that finally did! :D

One thing I've been looking for is a couple of decent reflectors to use with my indoors macro setup. I have 2 flexible clamps (these ones) which I've used with various cards that I've made myself. Last night, however, I found exactly what I'd been looking for completely free of charge! My wife had bought us 2 Co-Op pizzas to munch whilst forcing me to watch "The Voice". After I unpacked them and popped them in the oven I went to put the packaging in the recycling. On the bottom of each pizza was a 9" diameter round polystyrene disc. Hmm... I thought. A minute later I had two very useful light reflectors/shadow deflectors! :woot:

Nice job mate, that's just what I'm after. Had a tried making a light box with a shower curtain but it didn't defuse the light enough. Have you got al link to where you hadit made? Thanks for sharing.

Leroy, I'll try and find it for you. It was a while ago but can probably root it out. Hold tight.

Leroy. The guy's name is Mick Davis. His website is:

The only mistake I seem to have made is I just found the bill for the large box. It was £166 shipped so ever so slightly more than £50. :$ The small U shaped one was £30 plus £6 shipping.

Hi Duncan,

Do you know what the density of the plastic or acrylic is please, apparently there are different ones available.

Regards

Hmm.. I'm afraid I don't. However, if you give the guy in the link above a call he should remember as he made this one for me. He's only a small company with him doing the work and his daughter in the office, as I recall.
