hey guys,

i need a little advice of what to buy,

i have a PS3
Plasma screen with 3 HDMI inputs
an old sony midi system with 5.1 dolby digital.
old sony dvd player that connects to the midi system via rca cables

the thing is the PS3 cannot connect to the sound system to produce 5.1 channels. because my inputs are a little outdated on my midi system

i want to keep my original speakers that came with the midi system as they are really nice and match the living room perfectly.

i only have 5 speakers though ( do not have a seperate sub)

i would like to set up the playstation to output 5.1 channels, and also my tv to produce sound through the stereo to ( would be stereo output so prologic)

can anyone suggest the best setup for me and piont me in the right direction of where to go, budget of around £200! i dont mind buying second hand.

cheers

Your setup is fairly similar to mine. I chose to get a sony home cinema because of the compatibility with other sony products.

I got this http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-cinema-surround-kit/ht-is100

Slightly more than you wanted to pay but the sound is simply awe inspiring and the speakers are only slightly larger than golf balls. Seriously - pop into a sony shop and check them out - simply awesome and not ugly in the slightest!

have you double checked the output specs as in some cases they output more than two channels.

Failing that have a look at the list of AV Receivers on Richer Sounds (im not sure how good or bad the prices are)

Edit to say if your playing 5.1 with no sub your loosing sound quality and to me it sounds awful when you do so.

if you did get a seperate AVreciever you may not be getting the best out it with existing hifi speakers (but it is something you can upgrade as you go on) a sub would make a difference as well.

ive got a sony AVamp (a cheapish one but im impressed with it, but will be looking to upgrade eventually) connected to a selection of M-S and celestion speakers. i think i paid about £170 for the amp but obviously the cost of the speakers is a lot more.

you would be wasting money on another set of speaker that would be better spent on the main unit.

this, buy an AVreciever, plug your current speakers in (depends on impedence of the speakers as to whether thats ok) and use that, then add a sub and replace the speakers with better quality ones when funds allow.

connect the PS3 in with either HDMI or optical (i presume ps3 has optical out)

thats what id be doing anyway

Go into Richer Sounds and tell them what you want to do...Im sure they'll help you out and suggest what kit will fit your budget and requirements....
