I have two Fujica ST-801 bodies, one with a dead meter and the other with very stiff controls. Rather than sending them away to be CLA'd, I'd like to have a go myself. I'm thinking of using the dead body as a parts donor for the stiff one but I've never tried anything like this before so I'd like to be sure I've got everything I need before I start.

I have a set of precision screwdrivers (slot, cross-head and mini-hex) and a big tub of cotton buds for swabbing. What other tools would you recommend?

I've read that lighter fluid is useful for cleaning parts so I could get some of that, although I also have plenty of brake cleaner in the garage. The benefit of the latter is that it evaporates quickly without leaving a residue but could it be a little harsh on camera parts?

What lubricant(s) should I use?

Can you recommend any how-to's or step-by-step guides that give me some idea of what parts will need to be cleaned and which should be lubricated (and maybe more importantly, which parts shouldn't get grease or oil on them)?

The dead body came with a Fujica EBC lens and I reckon I could recoup what both bodies cost me by selling that so I won't be heavily out of pocket if it all goes tits up.

Poll added because I've not done one of them before either :)

I've voted and I've been very helpful......also I lied as I don't actually like cheese.

I did take my old Yash Mat to bits recently to see if it could be repaired but when I looked inside my head began to spin and I fell in the sink.....but I am the world's most useless repairer of anything.

Definitely needs videoing. Taking cameras apart is not for those without patience, excellent eyesight and highly nimble fingers!

it seems most of us like cheese, and wouldn't trust you with a hoop and stick, never mind a screwdriver

So none out of three is an acceptable score, right?

Thanks, Nick, that's awesome. Will conversation you shortly (they're not PMs on the new forum but the intention doesn't make sense now) :D

I didn't expect anything less. ;)

To be honest they're a very basic cheap as chips camera and unless they have any sentimental value just go ahead and do it.

I have a copy of this that you're more than welcome to borrow if it would be useful.

Just PM me your address and I'll drop it in the post if you need it.

Best advice ^^^^.....for me I've favourites but don't love my cameras so if I have a problem with one, I'll just use another. But will still have a go at fixing them and if no success, they end up in my spare screws\parts box.

I have swapped the top cover over on a Nikon FM2 for a new one bought from Nikon & have taken an F3 DE2 viewfinder apart to repair the eyepiece blind successfully (I have the repair manuals for both which made things easier). Even with the repair manual there are some things that i wouldn't consider attempting though. The A part of the CLA.

I picked up a Nikon repair handbook earlier in the year http://www.amazon.com/Camera-Repair-Handbook-Thomas-Tomosy/dp/1584280417 A very interesting read & I have had to slap myself to stop buying broken stuff off of ebay to try & repair it. Have limited myself to a pair of sold as broken MD-12 motor drives which I managed to fix easily. I think the pair cost £15.

Trying my luck with fixing a Yashica Electro TL at the moment. Cost me £10 off of ebay so not much lost if I can't get it working again.

I did the same to my Practica TL3 Super on Sunday and ummmm Brian is sending me a new one :-)

Never mind the camera, who's added an option to the poll? And how?

I was wary of the A too but I think the shutter speeds sound pretty good so hopefully it'll be a fairly straightforward clean and lube.

Let's wait for that one to come back and bite me :suspect:
