Hoping to go from Holyhead to Dublin as a foot passenger at the weekend. Has anyone done this as a day trip before? Is it possible to buy tickets at the ferry terminal or is it best to try and book in advance? Finally....do you need any form of ID such as passport?

Cheers

Done this route more times than I can remember ...

No passport needed and am sure that you can book at the terminal.

The Jonathan Swift is the fast ferry that will not travel if rough.

The Ulysses is the big b****r that will sail in anything.

Also, Stena Adventurer and Stena Nordica make this crossing. Stena Explorer (high speed) is currently on restricted crossings.

Although, in theory, you don't need your passport when I went a couple of years ago I was advised to take it, just in case.

Cheers guys, do you just park in the long stay car park there and then walk to the entrance? Looking likely to get the noon crossing with Irish Ferries

And come back the same day?
The last Swift of the day leaves Dublin at half two, so you'd have to come back on the cruise ferry which leaves at 5 to 9 and takes just over 3 hours (vs just under 2 for the Swift). If the weather's bad and it's REALLY rough, the Swift might not run at all.

They recommend you take your passport - you don't need it to cross the border but I think they like you to have some photo ID. If you decide you're going to take your car with you, bring your driving licence (although it'll be a bloody expensive ticket!)

If you can get a cheap flight, it's much better (IMO) doing it that way - the ferry, particularly the night crossings, is just a great big floating pub. If you go on the Swift and pay a bit extra for a Club seat, it's a bit more pleasurable, but unless I was taking my car, I'd fly.
