:help:I took some shots last weekend no problems got it back out of the bag today and can't take any pics it will do everything apart from take the shot it just comes up with ERR 99, I ahve switched on and off took the battery out and back in, reset all custom functions, held the shuttter half way whilst turning on and of, now out of ideas Canon help line is closed until Monday, wanted to use it Sunday if the weather was any good, anyone got any ideas, hep needed, only had it just before Christmas so it not been over used.

If I remember rightly its a problem with the contacts either on the lens or on the body. Try removing your lens and putting it back on again.

Have changed the lens to my macro lens no good still have the same fault:'( thanks for the idea

have you tried cleaning the contacts on the camera and lens?? use some sensor cleaning fluid if you have some..

I will clean the contacts to see if that works and then recharge the battery as soon as its done will let you guys know thanks for the advice lets hope it works or my wife will have to put up with my major sulk all day tommorow as well.

Have cleaned the contacts still have the same issue just waiting for the battery to fully charge to see if that works fingers crossed, if this doesn't work will I have send it back to Canon??

someone else had a similar problem (different camera, same symptoms)
turned out to be a dodgy charger!
wasn't giving the battery a full charge

btw ERR99 is "dunno what's wrong - but something is"

ERR99 is a catchall error, means it doesnt know whats wrong, as Mike says.

What lenses are you using ian ? Have heard of some issues with some of Sigmas range and Mk3's.

Definitely try the cleaning of the contacts though, i had errors on my 20D when using the 100-400, cleaned the contacts with eclipse and the problem has long gone. Also make sure all the pins are out and not stuck in ?

Hope you got it working though :)

I get the same error with my 24-70 on the MkII and the 20D, sometimes cleaning the contacts works sometimes it doesn't. I'd be tempted to take it back, you don't want that in a new body.

I agree with everyone here - clean the contacts, remove and replace the battery, but don't rule out a problem with the CF card - try another card if you have one. Also try using the SD card slot.

My original 1DMK2n just wouldn't work at all from the SD card slot and had to be replaced. The 1 Series cameras are so incredibly complicated you really need to check and recheck every possible function. If in doubt get it returned!

I had a 10D some time ago and had a similar problem with a Sigma 70-210 lens. Sometimes it would take a shot no problem, but sometimes it would throw up ERR99. I could never pin point the error. It seemed to work at some focal lengths, but not others, same with the apertures, some but not others. Try changing the lens to manual mode, this should remove the cameras interaction with the lens and perhaps help to pinpoint the error?

If its a new camera take it back to the shop and ask for a replacement camera, why bother with all the messing about, if it starts to work again are you going to keep it ?. I know I wouldn't.

Do you have the latest firmware? I think an err99 was resolved with one firmware upgrade. If you have the latest version 1.1.3 I suggest you take it back.

Thanks for all the advice have tried all of them but no good, Ian the problem started when the 100 - 400 was on but I had used this befor, I think I will just take it back and see if they will give me a new one, if they say know we will get it repaired where do I stand. Once again thanks for all the help.

I had this problem with my 5D and it was also down to contacts. If I get it I just hold the lens release button and swivel the lens back and forth fairly coarsely. It always fixed it.

I phoned Canon who said they would charge and it would take 3 weeks!

Perhaps the dealer you bought from will be of some help.

dont forget to clean the contacts on the camera AND the lens..

Also try and use a differnt charger if you can..
