Here's my entry for week two - Poem/Poetry:

I thought the words here were quite appropriate as I venture into this challenge.

Poem/Poetry

The Orchid

A New Bud Springs Forth
Free Of The Constricting Soil.
Out Into The Brilliant Sun.

Its Fate Unknown,
Its Future Paved.
The Hardships It Will Encounter
Shall Indeed Be Harsh.

However, Even The Smallest
Of All Plants Can
Flourish.

Andy Quach

Paul your first two are great, well done

How was the first one done?

Thanks Vicky - glad you like them.

The first one was a bottle of perfume perched on a CD through which I shone a torch, which was all balanced in a PC tower I was repairing (I kid you not) - only thing I had to hand at the time! I wanted to use the reflection in the CD for more colour but couldn't ge it quite right.

The background was a simple cloud render in photoshop with a gradient fill of the two colours.

Good start to the 52 and interesting how you did the first one, I was wondering. I'll have to remember the old light through a cd trick. Can't help thinking the 2nd could do with a bit more DOF and it looks a little oversharpened but a decent shot none the less.

Thanks for the comments Neil,

I wanted the light in the bottle to be bluer - but couldn't find anthing suitable to cover the torch. Was going to use some Quality Street chocolate wrappers but they got thrown out very quickly after Christmas

I took the Orchid photo back in the summer, just after I got my 50mm 2.8 so was just practising really. I agree with the oversharpening (again getting used to CS4).

I love both of these Paul.

The first one is kind of disorientating in a strange (but good) way.
I love the lighting effect, I would never have said that it was a perfume bottle. It took me a while to work out whether it was a single object, or a smaller object with a reflection below it. It was only the lid of the bottle that gave it away.

The second one is beautifully lit, simple and elegant. Goes perfectly with the poem.

Thank you for your comments Sarah. The first is a bottle of 'Ghost' perfume.

I'm enjoying the challenge of doing this 52 - certainly gets you thinking.

Onto week 3:

Chopped

Had a couple of ideas, this was probably the best.

Really like the idea behind #1. It's a very cool effect. The orchid works for me too.

Loving #3 as well. i had a similar idea. I was going to stick a knife in a pork chop so it looked like the blade was the chop itself.

I thought of something similar to your #3. I really like the way yours has come out. I like the different woods contrasting with the sharp clean blade.

Very strong start to your 52 Paul, I like the all...

week 1 - Love the lighting, it has a very sexy feel about it and bang on theme. (tissue paper also works).

week 2 - Very nice poem and photo too.

week 3 - Great idea Dean and very original. As mentioned the contrast is very good...Certainly works for me

Great idea and nicely composed shot. If I were being picky I'd like to see something more dramatic with the lighting. Maybe less even with some fall off to one side

Hi Graham,

Appreciate the comments - although I think you may have meant them for another thread

I think they're all really great concepts. The only thing that's getting in the way for me is that they seem to be slightly over-sharpened, especially week 2. Other than that though, great shots :)

Great idea, wood on wood on wood.

Cheers guys

What sort of thing did you have in mind? I only have the onboard flash at the moment so a little restricted with lighting.

Like this chopped one, taken the simple approach but with a nice twist

Thanks.

Thanks Louise. I really struggle with trying to get the shot sharp in camera then go overboard in PP.

All help and advice is greatly appreciated, after all that's why I started this 52 - I really want to improve this year.

What program are you using to process your pics?

I really like your chopped one.
Great idea, and you have executed it really well.
Will be checking back to your 52 again, great start you have made :)

you seemed to have started this 52 project off in top gear well done love the orchid best

Ah I didn't realise that, you did very well then. Looking at the shadows, I presume you bounced it off something? All I would try is putting some black card around one side to soak up up some light? worth a try anyway

Thanks Rikki. I will be commenting on other peoples 52's as soon as I find the time - there are so many!

Thanks. Need a challenge - don't seem to use the camera enough so this is ideal.

I'm looking at getting a 430 EX II soon, but in the meantime will have to make do with the on board. I do have a diffuser for it though.

I'll give it another go and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the advice.

as they're all still life, are you using a tripod? If you aren't then I'd suggest putting the camera on one, then using either a remote shutter release, if you don't have a shutter release, have a look in the manual at the custom functions and mirror lockup, it's handy for staying away from camerashake :D

3 good shots to get your 52 going, great interpretation of chopped for this week.

That's a great idea! Damn, the blade on that knife must be sharp. I'd have preferred the board being on a different surface as it's all a bit samey in colour, but otherwise a big thumb!

Well thought out shot, great angles too

Cheers Alby.

Thanks Louise. I did, in fact, use all these suggestions (with the exception of the shutter release - should have used that). I either can't get a proper focus or maybe I'm oversharpening in CS4 or most likely just not using the equipment correctly.:shake:

Thanks Scott. Hoping to keep this going.

3 very good images, well done

Thanks Jon.

Thanks Lee. I agree with the surface. I did this on the kitchen floor. The worktop surface is wood as well but was too close (reminds me to put a wide angle on the wish list!)

a good start to your 52, I like the idea behind your week 3

Week 1 is great, very surreal and I have no idea what it is... I think its the lighting I really like, the background colours are lovely.

The poetry image is spot on theme, it's not quite doing it for me as a photo but I'm not good enough to figure out why...

This weeks image I love. Excellent idea well executed, ticks all the boxes and it made me giggle. Great work.

 Very clever and inventive interpretation of the theme.
Good composition of the various elements in the frame and lovely clean. crisp details.

To pick up 2 of the points already made above :
- I'd really like to see the board on a more contrasting surface.

- It would be nice to see how it looked in more dramatic lighting. It looks to me like this was shot in natural light coming from a door/window to the top right?
It's given you nice even lighting and minimal shadows, but I think this might benefit from something with a bit more punch.
If you only have onboard flash, have a play with household lighting items like torches and desklamps.
The advantage with still life is that you can use a tripod (or anything to rest the camera on to keep it steady) to experiment with longer exposures and get different effects. And you don't need anything more than black and white card to experiment with controlling where the light hits.

week 3 looks good
love the idea and composition
a touch more contrast perhaps?

each week better than the one before
