I am going to NZ at the back end of next year for 3 weeks and I know its going to be a photo opportunity of a lifetime. I will probably take a lot of shots but wonder how I can store them all. Do I just have to buy loads of CF Cards and be done with it or do people usually take some kind of Hard Drive storage when they go away?

i normally take my laptop for this purpose, its also good as it is some entertainment for everyone in the evening looking through the days pictures.
also it means you can pick the best photos from that day so instead of having a massive amount of photos at the end, you already have the best ones from the holiday selected which you can then cut down as required

I have a epson P-3000 worth getting one. ideal fro traveling

I use an Archos 605 as my back-up on holiday http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128473&pf_rd_i=468294 This can also be your entertainment as well, as it can act as an MP3 and video player. You would need the extra battery dock to back up from your camera though http://www.amazon.co.uk/Archos-Batt...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261993610&sr=1-1 and this would mean you could also charge it from the mains whilst travelling and play your videos on to a TV.

I bought one as a birthday present for my girlfriend last year, and was so impressed with what it did and how it could also be used as a photo viewer, that I bought one for myself.

I do only use it for back-up on holiday though, and still keep all the photos on my memory card until I get home. For such a big trip, I would suggest not deleting the photos from your card and also backing them up to an external device.

I dump them in a laptop and also burn to DVD every night. That way I have two copies and the CF cards are re-formatted for use again the next day.

We dumped them all online... both times we went to Oz we simply took oodles of pics and then most evenings dropped the lot into a photo account. OK, pics were smaller then (last time about 5 years ago) but then storage costs were higher as well.

The first time we went, the kids' school back here in the UK used to check in on the pics every day to see what they were doing!

If space isnt an issue, take a netbook and external hard drive.
If space is a consideration, take a portable harddrive viewer.
If cost is a consideration, take one or two standard 2.5" laptop drives, and go to internet cafes to transfer files.
If cost and space is a consideration, take one standard 2.5" laptop drive and go to internet cafes to transfer files and upload pics online.

This.... and I also backed upto DVD when I went traveling

i use three cards...two 256 and one 1Gb...thats only 600 shots at max resolution in camera...4Gb
i obviously take only jpegs and slash edit..if its one place..one or two shots only
but envisaging a trip to the usa and patagonia has left me with the same idea
get a hard drive which you can plug the card/s into...

must be a headache for raw users to store uncut stuff away from home without a hard drive

thanks as well for those suggestions

hell they cost more than my camera is worth...£85..
i think i will just get more cards

I bought a netbook for this purpose, 160GB hard drive for storage and I can do a bit of processing and access t'interweb etc.

I also have a netbook for this ,great for storage and you can it take in hand lugauge as it's only 1kg . Also gives you internet access while your away if you find wifi hotspots .

When i went to NZ I used a laptop, each night dumped images to the Hard Drive and burnt them to DVD also, checked images on HD and DVD, then reformatted the cards.
Ended up with 25GB of shots - which was nice.

I either take a netbook or a laptop depending on luggage restrictions and an on the go hard drive that I can transfer to without the netbook/laptop. I usually fill the harddrive and back up to the netbook before wipeing the memory cards.

I once went the way of image banks and portable storage, but now I just take a small laptop and a seperate 500Gb Hard-Drive for immediate back-up - it doesn't take up too much space in the luggage and can be used to play DVDs etc if you want a night in.
You can also amuse yourself by doing some quick edits and file-management to save time on your return...if the Mrs doesn't get too peeved at you, that is!

netbook for me 160gb and the added bonus of e mail web browsing and the odd film etc
