Holidays 2016

I have been to Tunisia a few times and really loved it and I'm totally gutted that we're not going back for the foreseeable future. Now it's back to bloody long haul as Mexico and the likes are much safer !!!! No one with guns over there. :D

I assume that's a joke!

I've never privately travelled from south Cyprus to the north. Is it easy to do? My hire car seems to exclude it specifically. Anyone got any experience with that?

Forgot to ask (earworm thread reminded me)

Paphos, Coral Bay area. Never been there before, but seems OK.

How did you & the family like your hols?
Did you get out & about much?

Could have been better I'm guessing :D
LOL no that in relation to people living therexpenses and moaning about it.

I liked Paphos, we got our dose of sunshine heat an pooltime. But I wouldn't go here again.

It's too English for my liking; KFC, Pizza Hut, Mac Donald's everywhere. Even a Pizza Express on the sea front. Many if not most places selling full English breakfast. And everything is served with chips.

I've not been able to find a nice taverna that served quality meat in their souvlaki or souvla. All was rather dry, bland and fatty.

We tried a bit odd sight seeing. Lara beach for so called turtle conservation and great secluded beach was just a lot of rubble with litter and a remote shack for a cafe. Aphrodites baths was a tiny little muddy rock pools with nothing else. Troodos mountains are pretty but I think only worth it in the winter.

Our villa was very comfortable with great pool. The car hire worked out really well as well. George's ranch provided some fantastic hacking along the beach. And we made our own fun in general.

But if you like pink Elvis impersonators, karaoke evenings, big beer and chip bellies and tattoos then Coral Bay and Paphos could be right up one Street.

However, we also went to North Cyprus. Left our hire car in Nicosia and a friends secretary arranged a taxi for us. We staid at their house near Lapta in the hills. And then went out in Girn in the evening. Was the best night out. No English or western influences. The meze we enjoyed was out of this world, the quality of the meats and cooking was taken so serious. The chef sat in front of the open grill with his scissors shaping and perfecting the food.

The town itself was fantastic and such a cool atmosphere. None of the big beer bellies and tattoos and chips type clientele. Was slightly surprised to see a Dodge Challenger with Iraq number plates, and also two Lambos.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to come back as he was going to arrange to go to famagusta.

But yes I'll go back to Cyprus, but to North Cyprus only. I much much preferred that. I did enjoy Nicosia as well when I was there for work for the British Government but would do that for a family holiday. But will go to the North. The border crossing is now super easy and simple.

Arrived in Torba, just north east of Bodrum and on the opposite side of the peninsula this afternoon. Had some interesting times, like collecting the hire car at Bodrum airport - we flew from Heathrow making us international visitors, but went through immigration at Istanbul and used a local flight. Luggage was sent to international terminal while we first tried to baggage-reclaim in local & then moved to international, but the car hire offices are all in the local terminal, and access is only available on the other side of the security barriers. :p

We've only heard one English voice here so far, and the hotel people generally have rudimentary English. No sign of Maccy-D or Starbucks thank goodness, but plenty of large local bellies and a disco has just started going thump-thump in the distance. Western culture is all pervasive, it seems.

There was a big fire in the hills when we arrived, and a flying boat appeared to be dropping water. Conditions are a bit misty for photos, so we'll have to see how things go.

Haha :D exactly the memory I have of the place. (I mentioned the Elvis imps. earlier in the thread)

Shame about Lara beach, when we were there it was pristine & I think we (4 of us) were the only folk there. :(
At the time I described the baths of Aphrodites as a muddy puddle :D

I think the Paphos area would be an OK place to retire to, but didn't float our boat as a holiday destination.

I reckon our next visit to Cyprus might just have to be to the North. (y)

Glad you got your sun & pool time.

We've been discussing our next family holiday tonight. Winter sports first, then likely the Dutch Antilles in the summer.

Oh and perhaps easter to North Cyprus and stay with my friends.
