-Any tips when taking your DSLR abroad -

-Particularly thinking in terms of....
  • insurance
  • storage
  • what kit do you take?
  • essential items?

- I'm going to the Canaries in 5 weeks time!

-any thoughts will be much appreciated :)

Keep it simple! I wouldn't take more than one lens, say a 24-70 or similar with a filter for protection, extra camera cards which after shooting, I wouldn't store with camera, just in case it should disappear!. Therein lies greatest problem, insurance. You might have to go for specialist one off insurance as most holiday policies will not cover the replacement cost of an SLR.

To carry camera, a small non branded bag should suffice.

Im going to New York in a couple of weeks and was thinking of taking my 300mm lens, or should i stick with the smaller lens ??

Smaller lens!

If I am going on a trip especially for photography I take a body and 3 lenses, but if I'm taking my camera on a normal holiday I prefer to travel light, just body and walkabout lens (and usually compact too) in a small bag as I want to be enjoying the holiday, not carting round loads of gear and I'm sure stopping to change lens loads etc would really annoy whoever I'm holidaying with.

My kit is insured through Aaduki, but if you search the forum there are plenty of threads ;)

I am going to Sweden in July , shooting at a football tournie so I really need to take my 100-400L
should I carry it with my hand luggage ?

(no smartass comments please)

I would never put any of my kit in the hold, so if you can fit the lens in your hand luggage allowance then do so. Otherwise its proper flight case etc time!
