Right, not been abroad ever before, and we will be looking at doing something this time next year, so plenty of time to revise the subject!

I don't want anything ott busy, something nice and relaxed if possible
Would have to have plenty of things to keep us busy as none of us drive.
Be suitable for our 8 yea old daughter and my 18 month old son (ages at time of travelling)
Some great photo opportunities would be great and wildlife would be a great plus too.
Maybe around 7-10 days, maybe 14 if cost is acceptable.

So if anyone has any ideas or recommendations, they will be gratefully received.

we've been here twice and are going back again this year, its about 15 minutes walk from the village center (Hisaronu) and you can get busses to Olu Deniz, the blue lagoon and Fethiye, theres a small fairground in Hisaronu, the hotel has a kids club that's away from the main pool area and entertainment every night. The only down side for your first holiday abroad is probably the flight time its about 4- 41/2 hours depending on where you fly from.

I was going to suggest Turkey as well. Certainly fills the scenery and photo ops briefs. Not as cheap as it was, but still not bad. Any of the resorts reached from either Bodrum or Dalaman airports are good and if you don't go with a package they can all be reached via taxi from the airport for less then £40

without knowing a rough budget, or maximum travel time, bit of a difficult one to suggest....

Thanks so far for the suggestions. Some friends of ours have recently moved to turkey and they are currently in Antalya. The only thing with which puts me off turkey is the temperatures, I don't do very hot temps that well!

As for flight time, I don't think I would want to go above 4.5 hours really, as I have no idea how the children would be. East Midlands would be the most logical to fly from for us.

Budget I guess would be £1500 max

A friend who lives in Marmaris reports that the temps there lately have been upper 30's - low 40's c.

I have just booked a week in Hisaronu in October anyone know what the prices are like in Turkey ie: food, drink and cigs ?.

Cigs much cheaper. Expect £8-£10 each for dinner with a beer. Not bad but not as cheap as a couple of years ago

hmmm... going to have to struggle on suggesting anywhere given that neither drive..

Valencia is a lovely city, helps if you have some Spanish, and public transport is great but not sure if it's fun for kids....

If kids love beaches etc.... there are lovely coves, beaches and seas (However I did burst an eardrum snorkelling down to above 45-50ft, chasing a shoal of Dorada)....northern Ibiza is fairly quiet and there are buses to other parts of the island....

Mainland Spain, but not Benidorm? Circa 2 1/2 to Ali or Murcia... Canaries are approx 4 hours away, and plenty for kids...

Given you are not driving and you will have an 18 month old with you, I'm guessing you will not be able to travel very far on foot. So it is down to how happy you feel about tackling public transport abroad, or going somewhere compact.

Not abroad, but how about the Scilly Isles?

Compact, even the largest island isn't that big so no need for a car. Generally good weather without being too hot, not too busy most of the time, easy access to other islands, and photo opportunities.

olu deniz in turkey is a nice friendly resort with easy access via taxis dolmus or day trips out
we went in octobe with a 5 month old baby and just went in july when the baby was 15 months old, take a stroller with you and you can get anywhere
i have been been there 7 times now and never needed a car
june or septmenber will probably be a bit cooler for you as it was 45 in july

Thanks for the suggestions. As for the isles of scilly, that is our main holiday every october, we also got married there! but after this year we wont be able to go as a family because of the government changes on holidays and school time stops us from doing it. In the summer it is just too much extra money, everywhere wants a deposit now which eats into this years budget. I will still get to go in october each year, its a shame as my daughter and wife love the place.

Valencia seems interesting, hardly know any spanish, perhaps I should get a phrase book, and get learning! Lol
Madeira sounds really nice too,.
Benidorm, I wouldn't consider at all.

Get 2 phrase books, one for Spanish, one for Valencian. Then you can really impress people.

Valencia is a great city.

Train to Harwich then ferry to Holland then cycle everywhere (stick the ankle biter in one of those trailer things). Camp or B&B. Then the kids don't get bored with a city break nor cooked on the beach.
