Any of you peeps know of any accommodation near Strumpshaw fens or anywhere else nice in the Norfolk Broads? Me and MissMcT were going to stay in Seahouses for a break this summer, but were considering other options and we'd both like to visit the Norfolk Broads. Unfortunately neither of us drive, so we are looking at places that are easy to get to by foot or public transport. Staying in Brundall would have been absolutely ideal, however I can't find anywhere cheap and available as everywhere is already booked up for when we would want it (25th July - 1st August.) Anyone know the area and have any ideas or suggestions?

Strumpshaw is a stones throw from Norwich MK, however i think Public Transport may be problematic, try dropping Madmitch a pm, he lives in Spain now, but used to live not far from Strumpshaw and will probably have a better idea than me :)

Hi MK, I do not know of a place to stay in the broads area, and never use public transport. But if you do venture to this neck of the woods perhaps I could help you out with transport for a day? I have a car and some holiday due, and you could decide where/what we shoot?

Public Transport and Norfolk don't really go together I'm afraid. I'd be tempted to find somewhere in Norwich, as the buses and trains run from there. That and take tappi up on his offer. I may be about as well.

I'll have a look around and if I can find anything I'll let you know.

Mark

Or you could try hiring a Canal boat, that would be your transport and accommodation sorted in one. It will also get you up close and personal with some of the fantastic wildlife and landscape in the Broads .... damn I think I may have just talked myself into a holiday

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

That's a very kind offer my friend, and one I may take you up on. I'll bare it in mind and get back to you. Cheers :)

We did find a lovely houseboat but unfortunately it was booked up. The idea of me controlling a Canal boat scares me a bit, but as you say it would be a great way of seeing wildlife. Anyone willing to share a canal boat and act as skipper? :p

Will your budget stump to a Broads cruiser for 2 as have seen several available for the week you mention but price is around £670 for a week?

Cheers Canon Bob for the PM.

That is too much for us tbh. The cheaper the better really. Ideally all we need is somewhere to sleep and dump kit. Preferably we're looking at no more than £450-£500 for the week. Im also still somewhat scared by the idea of controlling a boat, although I realise the opportunity for wildlife shots would be great.

Public transport round here isn't brilliant. Buses / Trains aren't that frequent.

My daily commute is a 12 mile journey - 15 minutes on a good day by car. To get to work so I can arrive by 9am means leaving the house at 7.45am, and to change bus twice. Any delay which means I mean the connection means I'm late for work.

What about camping then? Get the train to Norwich with your bikes, then go from there  I'm sure you can get bikes on trains right? If not you could always hire a bike for the week in Norfolk.

About the boat thing though ... if it's just being in control of it that bothers you, maybe it might be worth having a go with one local to you for an hour or so, to see how easy or hard it would be

What ever you decide to do IMO you couldn't have picked a better destination. I love holidaying in Norfolk, but we tend to stay at Kelling Heath camp site near Holt right near the North Norfolk Coast :)

Don't worry, im used to really rubbish public transport. Our local service seems to have problems running an hourly bus recently.

We would certainly consider camping, but I would be slightly concerned about leaving my camera kit in a tent if we went out for a meal say. I think the ideal setup would be a small and cheap self accomodation houseboat. Fingers crossed I can find one. Are there any must see sites and places in Norfolk? :)

It depends what you like...

Norfolk is predominately flat, so lots of sky.

Norwich is a nice, compact city with two cathedrals and lots of other churches - quite a lot of parks and older buildings as well as newer builds.

The Broads are picturesque, and a lot of the farm land nearby was irrigated by wind pumps, some derelict, some surviving, some still working - eg Thune Mill.

Coastal towns - mostly Victorian resorts suffering for the last 20-odd years since package holidays abroad became popular. Cromer has a pier.

Tank museum on North Norfolk coast.
Couple of Stately Homes - Blickling Hall / Holkham Hall.

If you can get to the north coast I would highly recommend it MK. You can get on the steam train at Holt and have a ride through the countryside to Sandringham. From there you can get buses to Cromer, stopping a few places on the way I'm sure. If you fancy stopping at any RSPB sites I highly recommend Titchwell Marsh. There is also Snettisham but I haven't been far on that one so couldn't tell you how good it is. That passage along the north coastal road is fab though, and you will see plenty of beauty to keep you amused. Like I said I'm sure you can get a bus and various different points along that road, so it shouldn't be too much hassle transport wise.

Another option, what about staying in a static at one of the many different sites all over Norfolk?

As a resident of North Norfolk I can highly recommend the coast, it's bootiful as we say round here ;)

Don't worry about your camera equipment if you camp in N Norfolk, I'll look after it for you:naughty:

Jo you mean Sheringham not Sandringham, other than that all good advice.

And we're sorted! :D

Booked 7 nights in this place;

Which is in the centre of Brundall, the village we wanted. It means we'll be about 1-2 miles away from Strumpshaw Fen and withing easy distance of Norwich. Thank's for all the suggestions guys, its been helpful. Definately going to try and have a look at the North Coast and Titchwell Marsh. Im excited now.

Sounds like a result then, enjoy your stay in Norfolk:thumbs:

If you do decide on a TP meet with tappilappi let me know, if I'm about I'd be up for a day out with the camera.

Ooooh TP meet potential! Miss McT and MK's summer holiday to Norfolk... I'm excited! :D

Good choice MK, the map is an old one as the pub shown almost opposite is no longer there, the other pub is The Ram and serves a good meal, there is a chip shop next door and a chinese take away nearer to the Ram, down the road beside the b&b is the train station and the Yare pub (decent meals again). some of the trains from Brundall stop at the reserve but not sure if it's every one.

Have a good trip:thumbs:

You know when I did the spell check something told me it was wrong  Just not the spelling!

Great choice MK, I'm sure you will both have a grand time :D

Hi MK, glad you have got your accomodation sorted. If you still fancy a get together/TP meet decide on a date and let us Norfolk TP'ers know..............................................we are not too bad a bunch. :)

But then again, you know what they say about being "normal for norfolk." :cuckoo: :cuckoo: :cuckoo:

It's thinking a bit far ahead. But a TP meet would be cool. If I was to say Sunday 27th July, how many people would be up for that/could make it? As for where, i'll leave that to a yocal since i'll be a stranger in those lands. What say ye folk?

27th looks ok to me as well.

MK, Miss McT give us some ideas as to what you might like to photograph and I'm sure we'll be able to identify some venues:thumbs:

27th looks fine for me. As for where we go, I agree with Mark - give us some ideas and I'm sure we can think of somewhere suitable.

Well I pretty much shoot anything and everything (Which my portfolio can attest to.) But I mainly do wildlife and insect macrography. A meet at one of the wildlife reserves (And it seems you Norfolkians have a lot to choose from) might be a good bet. We'll definately be visiting Strumpshaw at various points, but are there others worth considering for the meet? Are there any good spots to take shots of Avocets (with a 300mm +1.4X TC)?

I'd quite like to explore some of the coastline perhaps seeing as Jo gives it such a good write up  but I'd be happy to go anywhere really :)

We can combine the two. Avocets at Cley Marshes and Titchwell, also Marsh Harriers at Cley. From Cley you can explore some beautiful coastline, to the west are large flat beaches (Wells, Holkham) Cley, Salthouse, Blakeney is Salt Marsh (one of my favourites!) there are also the seals on Blakeney Point. To the east the cliffs rise and the erosion kicks in!

You can either catch a train to Sheringham or Cromer, or see if Tappilappi or AndrewC are available for a lift:)

I'm not a great wildlife tog and this was taken on a 200mm lens but thought I'd share my favourite avocet shot from Cley, click the pic to get a larger shot:thumbs:

Nice shot. A trip to Titchwell Marsh sounds tempting. Anyone else up for this idea? Other ideas or suggestions? Where are you based tappilappi? If we go on the Sunday we might have to take you up on he offer of a lift as the public transport might be a bit rubbish. :) Is it worth me making a thread in the meet section?

I/We may be racing at Brands Hatch that weekend. Its World Touring Car Championship with a historic tin tops as support races - we may be entering a car in this race, in which case I'll be away.

Its not the normal championship we race in so things are a bit hazy at the moment.

LOL made myself hungry now:lol:

Hi MK/Miss McT. I live in Attleborough, a small town south of Norwich, about 24 miles from Brundal. I do not have much experience of togging the coast, but will be happy with what ever you decide, and short of petrol becoming more expensive than printer ink, I am not too bothered where/how far we travel!

Hey Mark, (sorry to go off topic) - I just checked out your online sponsorship page - looks like you need a bit of help!

very true and thanks for the donation... my folks have the sponsorship form and I have no idea how much they've raised yet, but last year I made £250.

sorry MK back on topic now:D
