Holga, Toy, Charity Shop, Car Boot and other Bargains (film only please)

Noticed today in our local RSPCA charity shop, a Gnome slide projector that does 6*6 and 135, claimed as tested and in working order (which probably means PAT testing and a power up) for £35. Struck me as interesting, and probably capable of some spectacular results, though I don't know anyone who mounts their 6*6 transparencies these days...

That's so tempting but I cant see me mounting my 6x6 slides.

Does it do 6x7

Does it do 6x7

I don't think it's intended to do so; it specifically said 2 1/4 by 2 1/4" on the documentation I could see through the window. However, 6*7 seems a more likely bodge than, say, 6*9, depending on the usual size of 6*6 mounts...

If anyone's interested, it's the Warwickshire South and East branch, who have two shops, in Kenilworth and `leamington. I can't find a number for the Kenilworth shop, but the web site says the branch can be contacted at 07867 743827.

OK thanks 6x6 is not big enough , I use a Pentax 6x7

Came across a bunch of cameras in a local charity shop. Aha! I thought, finally something worth buying. Olympus Trip: £30. Plastic Minolta compact, £20. Interesting Canon f2.8 compact: £20. Zenit with a Helios, £20. I mean, £30 for a fully-working Trip with a dealer's warranty, sure, but from a charity shop? Needless to say, they remained unsold.

Best place for compacts is the bootie, also strange quite a few digi ones as well maybe the digi ones don't work or 2mp or whatever but they look quite modern to me.

Charity shops tend to use ebay as a guide for prices now

I've not seen a single old camera, lens, flash or tripod in the charity shops in my local town, so maybe they get sent to HQ and put on internet sales/auction sites? As for the prices Keith has seen at his local charity shop, I think that collection of mediocrity may be gathering dust for some time, unless a student with more money than nous needs one for a project?

The whole point of going into a charity shop is to get a bit of a bargain (not a Stradivarius violin for £5 or something like that, just a bit of an honest bargain), and if they are going to start pitching their stock at the same prices as internet auction and sales sites then I think they'll end up rather short of customers and disappearing from the high streets... which would probably be somewhat ironic really!

I do see quite a lot of over-priced stuff, but then again I see some excellent charity shop bargains from time to time.

I got some great bargains from charity shops in the last couple of years including my Canon FT QL & 55/1.8 FL for £2.99 my FTb QL & 50/1.8 for £3.99 and a Yashica Minister III for £2.99 all together. Last time I went out I don't think I found anything.

I think you're right, but I don't think they understand that eBay comes with buyer's protection. If the seller says it works, and it doesn't, I get a refund. The charity shop are selling them at "it works" prices with no guarantee that they do. They need to sell them at spares-or-repairs prices. (I'd have taken a punt on that Trip at £5, it looked in nice condition.)

I once pointed out a faulty shutter on a Praktica Nova B a charity shop was asking £20 for. The assistant said "thanks for pointing it out, I'll throw it out" so I offered a fiver as I could use the lens and may be able to fix the shutter.

As it happens the shutter is very easy to access on this camera and it was a simple matter of straightening one of the shutter curtains.

Just out of curiosity, why not?
Firstly price, getting 6x6 slides mounted is quite hard to find and when it is offered it is expensive and secondly storage space, storing a sheet of 6x6 negs is pretty easy and takes up very little space, storing a box of 6x6 slides is problematic.

I store my slides in hanging sheets in a filing cabinet (because the quantity requires 4 drawers) but a smaller number could in principle be stored in a binder in appropriate sheets.

That's a result for £3! I thought I'd done OK with a boxed Sunpak 33G manual flash for £2.50 from a charity shop last year; I wanted something cheap with a PX lead so I could modify it to fit the cold shoe on some of my vintage cameras and that did the trick just fine.

...and I have another Canon efs 18-55mm (mark1`) for £2.50, but I don't have a camera to use them  but thought the erm digital UV filter (what's the difference from a film UV) and both caps would be useful.

The joys of digital....the other day was something strange when a Goldcrest (smallest bird in UK) was jumping up and down on the window ledge, it could jump about 8", even with my wife and I looking at it from about 2ft away (from inside) didn't scare it, (maybe it was trying to get in to build a nest or could see it's reflection in the window), anyway used up the remainging shots in one camera taking close up shots and no problem as I had the Nex ready with MF lens for more ..WTF battery flat :( so looking for a film that wasn't in the freezer and found one in my backpack..loaded up the T70 with 100mm lens and went outside and the same i.e. jumping up and down and didn't care if I was near and used it at 2.5 fps to get some action shots in mid air. Interesting to see the results and if any good will post.

Batteries are cheap for the Nex. I always keep a couple fully charged spare.

Yeah, don't buy genuine Sony :0). I've got 4 that I rotate. I've had no issues with Ex-Pro batteries and charger.
That's probably ok. Worth a punt.

I've got that, can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't 2 quid..:)

I like it but I think its a bit too big, if you can refrain from using its full capacity its a comfy wear.
Trouble is I can put my Mam 6 and lenses in it.....and there's still plenty of room, so I fill it up with more junk and the thing ends up weighing 20kg
20kg is not traveling light with an RF, in fact my F100 and a 70-200 is more than I want to carry regardless of what size bag its in.
I have taken that bag out with just an mju in the top zip pocket.....:ROFLMAO:

I found this Minolta AF-C, with EF-C flash at a flea market today for along with an Olympus Stylus Zoom DLX (Deluxe?).

The Minolta, not a camera I've seen before, is a cross between an Olympus XA, a Mju II and a Lomo LC-A. It has the XA's screw on flash and film advance, the Mju II autofocus and a similar lens cover to the LC-A.

I haven't film tested it yet as it needs the seals replacing. The batteries had been left in the flash so it needs some cleaning. Other than that it is in good condition.

The Olympus has something sticky and black on the outside but no other issues.IMAG0236_1.jpgIMAG0235_1.jpg

That's soo ugly  but hey if it takes sharp pics who cares.

I got both cameras for £5, the price was beautiful. The only two AF-Cs sold on ebay recently were £40 and £60.

Personally, I like it. It seems to be well liked for street photography by the people who've actually come across one. They don't seem to be as numerous as Mju IIs.

Time to load another roll of Agfa Vista.

I never usually get up early enough on a Sunday for a booty and yesterday was no exception.
So at around 11.00am I wandered over to the Booty after dropping into the supermarket expecting most stalls to have finished or packing up, and indeed they were.
So I was surprised to see a almost mint looking Canon EOS 1000FN - with the Sigma 35-80 f4-5.6 DL autofocus, battery alive focusing and firing, not my usual sort of thing but not expecting anything else, at the Booty price, I bought it.
I then spied an old "Fotima" camera bag on a stall that was packing away, i took a peak inside...
...Canon AE1-program good condition with Canon f1.8 50 lens and in the bag a less appealing Miranda Zoom lens, and Miranda flash Gun and roll of Agfa expired 1998....slight problem was that it would not fire. Battery I guess, so press the battery check button and one low "beep", it then fired.
...any way after some haggling on a "Booty price "- I took the punt!

2 more cameras I probably didn't need ;)

p.s took the Canon EOS 1000FN out yesterday afternoon, with the expired Agfa and it's almost toooo easy to use!

With the bootie there could be two ways of looking at it...get early and have first pick or late and the sellers realise they can't shift something and don't really what to take it back home..so sell (at times at a ridulous price) e.g. I picked up a pro A3 colour printer with all attachments for 20p, worked for a couple of years and sod's law, as I just bought a new set of inks and it stopped comunicating with the computer (probably an internal USB fault). :( Looking for another one but would go to £2 :D

I got mine on a flea market that is open every Wednesday and Saturday. I didn't get there til about 12:30 and only saw a box with a few compacts. Besides the Minolta and Olympus there were a couple of Konica Z-Up 80s too, one was the remote controlled version. There was two of the Kodak instant folders too.
