I have seen a few people now who hold their hand over the lens just before taking a shot. Could anyone tell me why this is done? I can't figure it out!

Sorry if it has been answered before but the search feature doesn't seem to be working right now.

Cheers

Could be to shade the lens from sunlight - I do this at times to prevent flare, and also 'cos I don't mind looking silly..!

If you're using a tripod or monopod then putting your hand ontop of the lens helps steady it.

Depends how you mean "over" their lens.

Could also be to take a reading from the palm of their hand to get a "neutral" mid-tone readout.

I mean covering the glass, then moving your hand away just before taking a shot!

Thanks for the help so far.

I've done this with camera phones to get a better image as the compensation for lighting is generally very slow on those.

That's a manual shutter! Like they used before the roaring twenties: lens cap off, count to 5, ignite magnesium powder (WHOOOSH!), replace lens cap.

:woot:
