Does anyone have any good tips to help me get rid of the thousands of crappy images on my hard drive, Ive become a hoarder, for some reason I think i will be able to use them one day!

Anything considered!! :cuckoo:

The only thing, is to be tough every now and then. Not overly tough.

Just go through, one by one, and think to yourself "Am I honestly going to ever make a print from it?"
Then if not...mark it as a turd.
Leave it a week, then go through again...if you still think the same, bin it.

Rule of turds, works a treat :)

thats a good one, ill do that, what software do you use for marking images, can i do this in light room? Ive only just started using it, but like it a lot so far..

I now do use Lightroom.

After a shoot, Ill import all the images.
Then I'll go through, and on each one I'll hit the x key to mark the definite rejects as rejects. These will be misfires, OOF shots etc etc. The easy to spot bad ones.

Then as soon as I'm done, I'll filter to show only rejected shots, then delete them.

I'll then go through, picking out ones that I think are rubbish, quite rubbish, and those that stand out for me as "wow" shots. I'll either marke them as Pick (P) or Rejected (X) again.....

Reading the OP has made me go look at some of the photos I took with my first digital p+s. At the time I said WOW to most of them. Looking now I can't think why I thought that. There are hundreds of 'em, too dark, too bright, wonky horizons, c**p compositions you name the mistake I'll have a few dozen that fit the description.

Having said that I'm not going to delete them, they remind me how far I've come since those early days. They also hold memories some happy, some silly and a few sad times.

All my pics are backed up on disc's, (backups and backups of backups) I'd hate to get rid of them from my PC only to find later for some reason the disc's didn't play.

I suppose really once a hoarder always a hoarder.

Oh Marcel I so love that ... 'Rule Of Turds'
Im going to have to pinch it, and and keep saying it to myself over and over while wading through my ext.hd this afternoon.
Im such a terrible hoarder too!

Alas I cannot take credit for it, I heard it a few years ago when I started into the foray of digital / online photography, and it's stuck with me since :D

He! he! yeah, Id giggled at it myself but never considered applying it to archiving which I think it suits very well,
should be taped large across my ext hd. :D

Ive actually added a few extra words but think Ill pm those!

I use Lightrooms rating system. I delete all technically bad images at the start, then rate the remaining ones 1 star. I then go through these and rate any better ones 2 stars. I repeat this until I get a few 3-4 star ones which are the ones I process. Ever so often I will delete any 1 star ones, which means all the remaining pictures have at least something about them that I like/liked.

:)

I use pretty much the same technique as Marcel, I try to be a bit ruthless though as I find it makes me try harder to get better results the next time if I've only got a few images left that I actually like :p
