Yes
It is sad, but the legend will outlive any amount of recycling. It's part of military evolution, and sadly it's time to make way for updated craft that are more relevant to the ways wars are fought these days.

well put Chris.

THanks Kev :) As a soldier it was sad for me to see the way things went for regiments (and my own corps too) under 2006's future Army structure. It killed off a great many proud, traditional regiments. But in the long run the Army is more efficient, communicating better etc.

If you look at the current operations we've very little need for a Naval force more than supply chain and other logistics, and carriers etc. Modern wars aren't faught at sea and haven't been since the Falklands and the end of the Cold War.

I recall seeing the carrier Ark Royal at the breakers yard in Cairnryan in a similar state.
Not a nice sight.

A sad sight..................but I served on both Intrepid and Fearless (her sister ship) and tbh, they had both seen better days. Towards the end, whichever one was in service was being kept going by bits cannibalised from the other and even the expertise required to keep the (steam) engines going was getting to be in short supply!

Having said all that, some of the memories I hold of those times are precious.
