what has caused the vertical shafts of light ( or lack of it?) through the sky and cloud about one quarter in from the RHS?

If it's a developing issue, then what have I done?
5x7 sheet souped in Orbital processor , constant agitation with time adjusted accordingly.

Dissapointing as the image with it's autumn / winter tones and lighting are rather nice imo.

Well I can only guess for your problem which will not be very helpful and can only suggest to use Photoshop to correct....but it looks like houses at the bottom? h'mm a place to get away from people

Looking closer at the original scan and the negative, it would appear not to be another stray band but I can see where you're coming from.

Uneven development is looking like a possibility although I didn't soup this neg any different to how I've done hundreds before.

Uneven development seems the most likely.
I had similar when I didn't use enough developer in the tank- one of those moments when you think you are doing the right thing but...
