Hiya My names Ian :D

Just brought a Sony SLR A230 im new to SLR cameras, im in to cars, and car shows and go to santa pod a few times a year and Silverstone

Question to ask is.... I go to Ice Hockey and watch my local team play, thing is when i take pictures on my old Panasonic NON slr camera the ice hockey players blurr in the pictures, what causes this and is a SLR the answer to my problems?

Welcome to this site Ian, there is a thread totally for Sony camera users, its full of information and ideas. Get taking photos there are lots of competitions to enter. Have fun.

hi and welcome
blurred pics are to do with shutter speed against available light
the more upmarket dslrs probably score well since they offer relatively noise free high iso's

but dont be brow beaten...non dslrs can cut it as well

So am i wasting my time buying an SLR then?:bang:

you are definatly not wasting your time, both types of cameras have their own advantages and drawbacks. i think you will benefit greatly with your new sony dslr.

Welcome to TP. The fun starts now :) Your new sony will have come with a small handbook loaded with basic info on how to set up the camera and the different setting for various styles of shots. Take the time to read it and practice the different settings as laid out in the handbook.

DSLR`s can be tuned to all types of shooting and thats the beauty of them. Dont skip the hand book it is a very good manual and is full of useful hints and tips from Sony.

Oh and the best thing .......... Enjoy !

Thanks for the advice, i will read bits of the manual, i heard the on screen guide is also good?

Just brought a Sony 8gb card for it so that **** have plenty of space :D

You got Blurred hockey players because the shutter speed was relatively slow. The shutter speed is determined by the available light, the ISO and the aperture. The best way to over come your blurred players is to up the ISO setting and/or use a faster aperture.

As a wee guide ISO 100 needs twice as much light as 200. And 200 twice as much as 400 etc etc. So as you’re shooting indoors I guess light conditions will be pretty poor, so aim to start with ISO 400, adjust to a higher ISO to give a faster shutter speed.

Now Aperture – when I say a faster aperture I mean to open up the aperture to it’s widest. This is will probably be f4, f4.5, or f5.6. Bear in mind a big fast aperture is a small f-number. f18, f22 or f29 is NOT used for sports.

Start with ISO 400 and aperture of f4 or f5.6 and work from there.

Now if you want to get stunning shots of hockey players you need, what is called a FAST lens. Which refers to the maximum aperture of the lens. This will normally have a maximum aperture of something like f4 or f2.8. Now, as a fellow Sony user there is a great long zoom fast lens out there, and it’s cheap. It is 20 - 25years old but don’t let that put you off (check the m/bike shots on my website, most were taken with this lens). It’s optically stunning!! Do a search on eBay for Minolta 70-210 f4 or Minolta Beercan (it’s the same lens). Expect to pay £100-150.
