I shoot with a Nikkor 16 - 85 looking to buy some grad filters this week can I use the 85mm filters or will I need to go for the 100 mm, apologies if the subject has been done before but I need to get this sorted ASAP

Many thanks

What camera do you use and which Filter holder system are you going to get?
If you have a crop sensor maybe the 85mm would be OK, they are half the price of the 100mm, but you may get vignetting in the corners. If you are full frame or want to go wider than 16mm in the future then I would go for the 100mm.
I use 100mm ND Grad Hitech Filters with a Lee Filter Holder system and a 105mm Heliopan Circular Polariser. I got them when I had a 1.6 crop 40D Canon with 10-22 lens, to avoid vignetting in the corners. They now work fine for my full frame 5dII and 17-40.

Sorry about any erroneous links(in green) the forum software puts in its own and I can't be bothered to keep on correcting them

Currently use D7000 no intention of going to full frame, but may buy 10-24 in the future, so looks like 100mm best option.

Thanks for the advice.

Hello Martin
I have the Hitech 3 slot 85 mm filter holder. It is far superior in construction to the Kood or Cokin holders, has an engineered quality.
The slots are modular in that they can be added or reduced. Reducing to 1 single slot, (its slimmest mode) on my Nikkor 10 – 24 mm lens vignetting is apparent at 10mm. But clear at 12mm.
Regards
Roger.

Hi
Have just changed the configuration to use a Kood 77mm adaptor ring, it is slimmer than the Hitech adapter. With this fitted image is clear of vignetting at 11mm. The screws holding the slots have to be reversed or these come into the picture. Almost there.
