Hi all.

I have a small but commercial shot coming up next weekend, and am considering hiring an 'L Series' lens for the shoot. I might just be worring about nothing - maybe the pressure of aspiring to an L series is making me a bit nervious, but has anyone out there had any experience with companies like Lensesforhire.co.uk (as advertised here).

And what would be the general opinion of you guys and gals as to which lens to go for. I was considering the Canon 100-400 f4.5 IS USM.

I simply can't afford to purchase an L series outright at present, and i'm not yet sure that it would even be justified at this moment in time.

It's an outdoor game fair, mainly people shots, and some arranged group shots.

My current bag contains:
Canon 40D + BG-E2N + 430EX
Canon 50mm f1.8 II
Sigma 10-20 (lovely)
Sigma 17-70 f2.8 DC Macro
Canon 17-85 IS USM
Canon 70-300 IS USM
Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro

Comments and suggestions would be very much appreciated as I step deeper into small but nevertheless 'commercial' work.

ps - this forum is great - glad I found you.

I've never used them...but these people are regular contributors here, and seem to have a good reputation:

(Edit...just read your post fully and seen that you already know about lensesforhire. Sorry!)

I cant comment on what lens you should be looking at as like Andrew says without knowing about the shoot it is hard to advise, howevere I would say you seem to have quite a bit of duplication in your kit bag, personally I'd loose the Canon 17-85 IS USM and Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro to save some weight - maybe sell them and put the proceeds towards some L glass you seem to be longing for :)

Thanks for your feedback so far - just looking again and having spoke to Lensesforhire.co.uk the chap there mentioned the 28-300 f/3.5 IS USM - he thought the 100 end of the 100-400 might not be the best option for the arranged groups shots and that the 300 should be fine for the casual shots.

I am really trying to avoid changing lenses during the day if at all possible, and carrying an albeit 'carefully selected' bag of bits.

The shoot is at Blenheim Palace at the CLA game fair - all out doors, 1,000's of people, hopefully good weather.

Can't say enough good things about Stuart and Lensesforhire.co.uk.

Used them to hire a 70-200 L a few months ago for a wedding.
Service was amazing, price was great, coms where great....

Thanks everyone. Decission made - I have just booked the L 28-300 IS USM.

Also spoke to a collague who has the L 70-200 f2.8 and he said the 28-300 was the best all-singing lens around and was next on his 'to own' list.

Cheers for you help people
