I have seen posts here and there about hiring gear, lens etc.
Do any of you do this?
Is it expensive?
Do the places you hire from expect /are looking for you to buy the gear. Try before you buy?

The reason I'm asking is I am away in Feb 2008 and I can not afford all the top notch lenses so I thought may be I could hire.

I would like to hire from around the Manchester / Bury area so anyone got any links.

Hope I make sense.

Thanks.

There's a couple of places that will hire but be aware that the deposit is usually around the value of the item you're hiring so it's a hefty outlay anyway.

Hmm thats no good then. Oh well I must start saving the pennies.

I have just returned from Calumet to book a lens for next weekend. Hire costs are not huge, but as pxl8 says, the deposit is equivalent to the cost of the equipment, which is ok if you have a fat credit card, but costly in the short term otherwise.

Out of interest...what are you looking to hire?

I was looking to try a zoom lens 300/400 for wildlife. I'm going to the NW coast of Scotland, Oban. Right on the coast. I will hopefully have a Nifty Fifty then (Wife's xmas present to me) for other shots.

Sent you a PM

Bob

Thank you Bob.
I have got to say that you are by far one of the kindest people I know. From my dealings with you and from what I have seen of other threads.:clap::clap:

Darren.

I may be able to help you, Darren.

Read this post. If it's interesting then you might like to read the rest of the thread in which it occurred: here. And there's not much point in looking at www.LensesForHire.co.uk yet, as there's nothing really there, but there will be soon.

I'm launching the store after Christmas.

Stewart, I missed the original thread as I was away on holiday and of course, couldnt catch up with every single thread from two weeks worth. However, now I have seen your plans, and how scary they are, I wish you the very best of luck. Yes, I can see all the complications mentioned in the previous thread, lots of obstacles to overcome, but I certainly think you would be popular round here and I would certainly be on your customer list. I hope your plans are progressing well.

One thing, insurance - is it worth investigating whether the renters own insurance would do temporary cover [obviously organized by the customer, not yourself] - so for instance, whether its photoguard, eandl, or whoever? Like adding a car to your car insurance for a week? They may be unwilling at first, but presented in such a way that if they can offer such cover, you can advertise their services to camera owners that currently have no insurance at all beyond usual household stuff, they may be more willing to allow their clients temporary coverage for stuff rented from yourself. Just an idea....it wont cover someone disappearing with a lens, but would perhaps help cover accidental damage costs :dunno:

I'm with Photoguard myself, and can't see a problem with your suggestion LL.... I just logon to my policy, add the item with it's value and serial number and I'm covered.

Only issue I can see is if the thing gets nicked, they're going to want to see the receipt for when I bought the lens arent they?

Nice to know you're still going ahead with your plans. I saw this thread and wondered how you were getting on.:)
