Hi everyone.
In need of some advice if you good people dont mind.
Im very new to digital photography and so i dont think hiring a studio would achieve much apart from making me look very stupid. However i would like to hire a model for some portrait/glamour shots as this is the area i would like to study.I have a backdrop and some basic lighting equipment but only have my(smallish)front room to shoot in.My question is do you think a model would work in my amaturish conditions?nobody i know will model for me so im a bit stumped.I assume models are used to working in studios and feel a bit of a fool asking them to come to my flat for a cramped shoot lol.any advice would be much apreciated
cheers

Hiya,

Go take a look at www.net-model.com
There are all sorts of girls there from complete beginners to pro's ... and the same goes with the photographers there.

A lot of girls work for 'time for prints' or 'time for cd' as well as payment, to mutually boost both yours & their experience or portfolio's.
I wouldnt worry about working from home if you have enough space to set up either.
Hth :)

May also be worthwhile to state that they are welcome to bring a chaperone (for safety reasons) so long as they (the chaperone lol) stay out of the way during the actual shoot.

Edit, there's also a site called One Model Place (http://www.onemodelplace.com) which has massive databases of talent.

Don't be afraid to go down the studio route either. Lots of studios organise group days or other days where you can go and learn a bit about the lights. I'm sure if you gave a couple of studios a call - tell them you're new at this and want some help, you'd be pleasantly surprised. There's also the advantage that the studio will probably be able to recommend a model or 2 to suit.

I've done a couple of group days and it really is good fun. No-one will stare and point at your lack of experience. The others will be helpful. Really.

If you're upfront about what you're doing and where you're shooting, you should have no problems. I've done numerous shoots in my front room, and while it's far from ideal if you're working with an amateur model it really shouldn't be a problem. What matters, especially if you're doing glamour/fetish/adult work, is that that you're friendly, professional, and put the model at ease. The advice about a chaperone is good, make the offer, it helps to show you're on the level. It can even be beneficial, if they end up bringing their friend/partner they can help out with the shoot :)

Also have a look at purestorm.com

Hime shoots are fine but if you are an unknown tog without references then the models will be a little more wary & may want a chaperone. The studio route is fine- they are there to help & everyone has to start. I've done lots of studio work but still get the studio to help setting up lights etc & also get input from the model as she knows her angles better than anyone.
If you are going to do this regulary join one of the sites 7 post a couple of pics. Also get the model to post a ref about you [ & you about her]. These refs gain you credibility in the modelling world & open doors to new models

Go & enjoy it

Thanks all for your suggestions.I guess as long as i am open about the situation with any model.Seeing some of the amazing shots you guys post on here is enough for me to bite the bullet and jump in with both feet.
cheers

dont u just hate it when you message the 'Amateurs' seeing if they can help you out getting into more glamour / fashion photography. I mean help two Amateurs out together, but they never reply...maybe is because i dont have any photos of glamour or fashion...but we all have to start somewhere dont we. Just bit deflating... :(

Paul, I wouldn't worry. Something will turn up! Luckily for me a friend has asked me to take pictures of her, I'm not happy with any of them so I doubt I'll post any for C+C. What I'm trying to get across is it will all come together, eventually

got someone sorted...and she is FIIIIIIIIIIIT!!
happy man right now lol

Ive not ventured into glamour models yet... barely done any portraiture really.
But, after seeing the address above for web-models, I signed myself up, posted one of my portrait nail pics, and got a great response!
One girl in particular is a stunning, experienced full time model who would 'love to work with me'.
My problem now is the confidence to say yes .... but where the hell do you buy that! :runaway:

I get it in off licenses, it costs around £20 and is called 'Wild Turkey' :)

i will be breaking it too. Concerning the shoot as its a hot bed room scene etc etc...just take a deep breath and do it...i guess we all got to start somewhere...

ill post my results once done

Ha! ha! best go get a couple o' gallons of that stuff!

Inaglo, you say yes, do the shoot. Learn from the people in the studio & enjoy it. You are all there for one thing- to take good images

There wont be anyone else present, just me & the model...
though youre right about just getting on with it, & while I know you are right, I still need to convince myself of it, arghhh! :bang:

Wow! looking forward to those results... talk about jumping straight in!

The first one is the hardest, you'll probably be unsure of yourself and nervous, that's natural. You'll likely make mistakes that you might not otherwise make. And try as hard as you might it *is* pretty distracting to have a glamour model posing for you.

The good news is it gets easier as you become more accustomed to the situation, and in no time at all you could be dropped into the middle of a harem and all you'll be thinking about is getting the settings on your camera right. Good luck, and remember to post the results :)

Hot bedroom scene as in the amount of heat generated by the lights or what..................................................?

Get in there & enjoy it. The models will be able to help both of you enormously, lean on their knowledge

May be an obvious tip this but... arm yourself with plenty of stock images from your favourite books/websites. The first time I had a shoot with a new model I completely dried up of ideas for poses and flipping through a couple of books with the model really helped inspire us. It's also quite a good icebreaker to look through some sample images with your model and find out what her tastes, limits and comfort zones are. She'll be more relaxed if she knows the images you're after are tasteful and that you're not just a perv! :D (unless you ARE a perv of course!) ;) :woot:

most won't reply if you don't already have a portfolio on these sites so try and practice on a friend or partner before hand

Heh, the man's right. With the models I work with it's quite clear, when you're posing and I'm behind the camera you will get complete and total professionalism. If you're also a friend and you're coming out drinking with me on the other hand... :naughty::woot:

sOMWEHERE ON THE NET [i THINK IT IS ON THE nET-MODEL.COM SITE or ephotozine] THERE IS A POSING GUIDE WITH PICCIES AS A PDF DOWNLOAD. THE MODEL IS CLOTHED BTW.

Apologies for caps, i forgot to take it off & am too lazy to retype!!!

Best poses are from models who know what they're doing; or from talented amateurs. Not all girls know how to pose good in a natural way; some just do, some don't and no guidance will change this. Skilled model is a gem, treasure it :)

Good thing is to put... big mirror behind your back, the way that model can see herself/himself. This is what I do and it always helps.

And give model a scenario; tell her "Ok, so it's late afternoon and you're thinking about getting a nap. You are undressing slowly" (for example). It's much better than just "leg here, arm here".

*butts in again*

Been thinking about this after a shoot on Saturday, and it's happened quite a few times so I thought I'd share..

You may find the model will stand in great poses *when you're not pointing the camera at them*. If the camera's down, the model will relax and will look natural. The key here is remembering exactly what they're doing, so you can replicate it when the camera's back up. I'll sometimes pretend to be fiddling with the settings to get the model to think they don't have to pose. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Not that I'd advocate this if you're hiring a model, but if you're working with a friend (as I often do) it makes it a whole lot easier if you can physically position them yourself. Stops you getting confused between model's right and your right (I direct from the model's perspective as much as possible), and lets you position them just how you want them :)

I have to agree purestorm is a good source and it's not all glamour, nice friendly bunch there too.

OK thanks I'll give it a whirl. I confess I didn't see that above because it wasn't a proper link.

Actually I won't rule out glamour shots entirely as some of the micro sites take glamour and I know one guy who does quite well from it.

Just have to see how the wife feels about having glamour models strutting around the place. hmmm....

im after getting into glamour too but am in the same situation as "wonderer"...
but like anything i suppose, unless u try or ask u never get anywhere

I use Purestorm and web-models, I find them easy to use and I've only had a few duff models.. i.e. cancelled the nite before or not turned up !!.

Mewstar.. just go for it...it really is not scarey !!! lol

I've got my first glamour session on Sat (17th), both model and make up artist are from purestorm. Seems to be ok so far. I'll report back If I have any problems, or put the pictures up for criticisms.

don't the models, "make them selves up" most of the time?

cus the couple of female i know that do modelling do it themselves.... but thats TFCD

Model photography isn't my scene, but I have read elsewhere you need to get a release form signed by the model allowing you to have total copyright over your picture. This would then allow you to use the photo professionally without any comeback from the model or agency.

It just that I havn't seen it mentioned within this thread
