Hired a 200-400mm f4 L IS USM Extender 1.4x Lens for the weekend

You missed the point; it's the best lens that can do 200-400. There are many times you can only have one body and if you want the best image quality across that range, that's how much it costs.
You didn't actually make a point other than "it's amazing" to which i have agreed, as for image quality, really, 99% of images taken with this lens which will see the light of day will be butchered on crappy newsprint at 72ppi, (look through the Sunday and Monday footy supplements) even on glossy magazines at 300ppi a double page spread can only print and resolve so much detail and current cameras and lenses are already much more than good enough.

I know in the real world we can't discount the cost.

However this lens will be around for quite some time. So F/4 and 5.6 may be more than good enough with the next two updates of the 1Dx.
And if cameras keep increasing their resolution Rob, a 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS MKII on a 60 mega pixel IDX MK III will be good as good cropped as this 200-400mm lens on todays 18mp 1DX and you'll still have f/2.8 if needed that some people require and want for that extra bit of subject isolation.

I'll still never be able to afford one even if I wanted one.

Gary are you shooting with 300 or 400? I remember there being a discussion on it a year or two ago?
