Hi all,

I had to make numerous phone calls today (and many emails before) with two company's about flash hires. - never has it been so difficult to rent a flash gun!

Both said they would not require a deposit seeing as I work for a large company and its not like I would run off with it.

bear in mind... Work have paid into a cash advanced for the shoot to pay for this equipment and my expenses on the shoot for 10days.

I do not know which company it was:
either:

Hire A Camera
or
Camerent

one of them has withdrawn £500+ for a deposit on a £300 worth of flash gun!!!!! - this is out my account and the only money I had in there was for the shoot (food & petrol).

both offices are closed till tomorrow when I can phone them.
but what do I do!? can I resolve this by tomorrow?

I'm away from the office tomorrow! and need that cash!

I give my 5 stars to lensesforhire as there service is ten times better to what the two company's above are, no problem what so ever! and did NOT ask for a deposit - which is how it should be!

With the greatest of respect, if you don't know what company has debited the money how do you expect us to?!

Call your bank and find out. They'll be able to give you all the information you need.

There isn't really a whole lot anyone on here can do about this - you'll just have to phone them both tomorrow and try to get it sorted I guess

Good luck ;)

Well which one did you give your payment details to?

I doubt, even if you find out which one took the money, they will get it back in your account the same day. I'd not expect to see it for a couple of days or so.

I gave them my details two both.
as I had to rent one flash from each company - neither had two in stock.

both told me in writing & phone no deposit was needed.

sorry I know, not much I can do till tomorrow. Just a real pain specially when I leave tomorrow, All I need!

Seems to me if only one of these companies is allegedly at fault that you are dragging the other one's name through the mud without good reason.....

Good Afternoon madam, can I have your account number and sort code please.............

actually both have been really poor. (which is why I included both)
numerous phone calls, emails. (call back's that never happened)

If I hadn't of named them... you'd be asking what one it was (and that I don't know till tomorrow)

Is your bank 24 hours, it might give you peace at mind if you ring them, they may be able to help.

I can understand your frustration though. Hope it gets sorted

Thank you for understanding.
I checked mine online, but will phone tomorrow morning.

right now, packing everything. :)

Good luck for tomorrow

If you haven't argreed to pay a deposit then they have withdrawn money without your consent, depends what you have in the e.mails, but you may have a case for a theft complaint. Wayne

More to the point, if neither company requested a deposit, why did you give them your bank account details?

I still had to pay for the hire of the flash units??...

but whole reason I booked with each is because they would not need a deposit.
if I had known they would withdraw £500+ on a flash unit that's worth £300, I could have gone and bought one!

charging this kind amount on anything that only costs £58 to hire in the first place, is ridiculous!!

Could it be one of them might have keyed the wrong amount and requested £580 instead of £58?

It's quite common for photographic rental companies to take a deposit for the full value of the equipment being hired. Granted £500 on a "flashgun" sounds a bit much.

Blimey you don't pay anything like that when you hire a 15K car, why should a £300 flashgun cost so much, if you hire a D3x then the deposits about £12K at that rate.

Yes but with a 15K car they have number plates and the police have cameras that read them so finding a stolen car is quite easy these days. Not only that most hire car companies now want finger prints when you pick the car up. A stolen flash is practically untracable.

Just call your bank and tell them a company has taken an unauthorised payment and they will reverse it. I've had to do it a couple of times over the years.

The problem is they take your cash in milliseconds and return it within 5-7 working days.

Ask the bank what time the transaction was made and tie that up with either one.

Finger prints! where do you hire from Parkhurst? lol, I have never been asked for those, and changing a number plate is a 2 minute job.
The OP was from a well known company, easier to trace than a stripped car.

 I know seems daft doesn't it. However, I hire regularly from Europcar / National (same company now) and it's somthing they started doing following a trial at (I think) Standstead airport where they typically saw 3-6 cars a month being stolen drop to 0. That said as we have a contract with them I don't have to provide my "dabs".

I know the OP is from a large company but Woolworths was a large company until it collapsed, as was Spicer Hallfield.

I do find it odd that the company said they wouldn't take a depost and promptly did - are you sure this isn't some theiving scum?
