Hippo's 52 -2011. Week 9 'FINISH' uploaded - Index on 1st page

I like the second of the later versions, just a little lighter but improves the image.
 
I like the second of the last lot the last lot the most as i found the other ones too dark. Nice idea and setup. I'm so struggling this week.

excellent idea for week 5 :) and must admit prefer the first of the lightened versions. Only slight niggle is maybe the pestle and mortar is slightly too central, no big deal though! :thumbs:
 
Good shot Ray, i agree with Paul in that my favourite would be the first of the lightened shots and would also be tempted to crop a bit bottom and left. Although I think part of my reasoning for the crop is because the pestle looks a bit like a cannon (not a 40D, that's a different Canon) which is strange because you would think the mortar would be closer to a cannon.
Anyway, great subject for the shot and I like the darkness.

Week 7 finally added. Light bulb filaments are very 'delicate' so here is my shot for the week. Taken with 50mm 1.8 + 21mm extension tube. Took about 50 shots before I got one I liked. Bit of a nightmare trying to get the light right, lots of refelections, plus playing around with different white balance settings. But quite liked this resulting shot. Feedback most welcome :thumbs:

Just noticed I missed your week 6 which I think sums up clutter well (although a lot neater than my house :lol:)

I love your week 7 which is a very clear shot and the colours are lovely. You did well to get it such without reflections.

The light bulb shot is a cracker - how did you light it? (the shot that is not the bulb!)

In answer to Top Banana's question re lighting. I could say that it was a very techinical set up with soft boxes, off camera flashes etc, but I would be telling lies.

As I said originally it took me about 50 shots to get what I wanted. I tried shots with a variety of combinations using the following
- built flash on my 40D,
- with 480EXII on camera
- with the living room light on
- with a floor lamp on
- with a battery powered LED desk lamp

I also tried different WB settings as well.

My final highly sophisticated ;) setup was no flash, living room light off, floor lamp on and LED desk light on diffused with kitchen roll. I also had my WB set as Fluoresent. The only PP I did was use auto-sharpen and add my watermark in Elements, other than that colours are as seen. Piccy of set up below

Another week where it has been 'chaos' at work and with life in general, so again was stuggling to find the time to get a photo. But here is my week 8 photo. When my little boy has a bath, it is always chaos :D He loves splashing around.

Brilliant idea, and love the colours and the way you have the word 'chaos' in the bubbles. I can just imaging the 'chaos' too when your son plays a tune on the plastic flute :lol:

Work is absolutely manic, so this is in effect my first Joker :'( ie, photo not taken specifically for the challenge. However, it still fits the week's theme.

So this is a photo of me at the 'Finish' line last September after a mate and I cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats unsupported in 16 days. An absolutely amazing experience and I rasied £4.5k for the MS Trust as both my father and younger sister suffer from Multiple Sclerosis.

First of all that is no 'joke' and well done to you and your friend Pinhead for your dedication, determination and time to help such a worthy charity. :clap:

The photo fits the theme spot on, and personally I think you should be allowed to submit this one as a true submission for the week (as this theme has your names written all over it) :D

Thanks for the link to your website .... I made myself a brew and have spent the last hour looking at the site and the photos. It looks and sounds like you had a fantastic time, even though a trying challenge. I had to chuckle at some of the photos though, they are brilliant (especially the one of the cycle road marking :lol: and the 'blind cat' :lol:) .... and the photo of the 'Fly Agaric' mushroom next to Loch Ness is one of the best I have seen.

I absolutely love the Scottish countryside, and having done a trip in my campervan up to John O'Groats I know how desolate the roads can be up there, not to mention the vast openess of the land. Reading your blog I could appreciate the trip that you did because I pretty much followed the same route as you from Inverness and it brought back some fond memories seeing your photos.

Wow what an experience it must have been for you both, and congrats on finishing the challenge :clap:

Dawn, thanks for your message, glad you enjoyed the website. I too loved the highlands and also really loved the lake district. I just wish I was closer as the photo opportunities are endless.

I just fell in love in with Invereray and probably a place that a lot of people haven't heard of. For me it was the same with the Loch's. Everybody has heard of Loch Ness, but to be honest, it was one of the less picturesque of the many lochs that we passed. It was also amazing to stay at Altnaharra (in the middle of nowhere) and usually the coldest place in Britain each year. When they now mention it on the weather that it is -21 or something, I now actually know where it is they are talking about.

It is funny that you mentioned the mushroom, When I got back and went to visit my parents, my mum said she liked my photos, but her favourite was the mushroom. I had to chuckle that I had documented an epic journey the length of the country and her fav photo was of a mushroom :thinking:

Anyway, work to be done,

Hi Ray, Not seen your 52 till this week. I suppose that.s what happens when I just go to new threads instead of looking at 52ers systematically. Very impressive work throughout. This image for Finish is no Joker. Not only is a great image befitting the theme, it tells a great story of some commendable fund-raising.:clap: It doesn't matter when it was taken.
I love your Chaos image too. Well planned, and nicely executed. great colours .

Like your hard (origional) photograph, nice and gritty with great detail

Your delicate, now that's one criystal clear photograph and I really like the colour, clarity and composition.

I'm trying to catch up with everyone still posting on the 52's as I'm living in chaos...in my head ;)

I congratulate you on your achievement, I see those ugly screens are still up there :( I will endeavour to visit and do a proper critique each week from now
