I am seriously interested in getting a Nikon D700 and 24-70 f2.8 but don't know if I want to buy used or new.

One thought though - how much leeway is there for haggling in highstreet shops like Jessops, Jacobs, LCE? If I said I was maybe going to buy used would they be likely to know £100 or so off? I might be after a new bag too which might sweeten the deal if thrown in for free.

Anyone had any experience with this?

Give it a try
They can only say no
go with Cash and don't be afraid to walk away.
In the current economic climate you're in a strong position.
Make sure you're dealing with someone who can make the deal though rather than a jnr who's been told to say "we don't do discounts".

you could buy a D700 from bestbuy for £1850 and via topcashback you'll get 8.08% back

How does the cashback thing work? When would I get the money?

Register with topcashback, click on the bestbuy link at topcashback.co.uk and buy online for home delivery job done. Usually takes 4-6 weeks for the retailer to pay up

If I were you I'd go with a D7000 instead and get some good glass with the money leftover and the battery pack for good measure. Though the D7000 is DX it holds up pretty damn well against the D700 in terms of performance, better in some aspects..

the D700 is due to be replaced by the D800 soon as well.

I've never had good experiences with haggling for cameras on the highstreet. All other high value goods I've managed to get something off.

The d7000 is most definitely not an FX camera.......

I bought a lens in Jessops last week, it wasn't really a case of haggling.
I asked the price and then asked for their best price.

Having checked Camerapricebuster that morning I realised that the only people cheaper on the web were WE, and only by £1.

That's more what I mean. I was basically thinking of saying I might just buy the body new and get the lens used but what could they do if I was to get both from them.

I find smaller shops generally won't budge a penny, especially Jessops. Although if you buy from a big chain such as curry's, Comet, etc you can normally find some discount codes on the internet. I got 10% off my camera that way.

Jessops by me wouldnt take anything off either times ive spent alot in store. Tryed to get a bag chucked in the first time(bought a d90+ extras) and wouldnt even add a filter or memory card the second time when buying a d700 &24-70.

Andy, we have a company account with Jessops at work and they've been really good in many circumstances when it comes to high value items - they've price matched all the way and even when (our) staff have gone in to do personal purchases, they've managed to get the price down to beat the big internet/high-street shops. I knock them for the fact the high-street shops have pretty much deserted anyone who doesn't want to buy a compact or an SD card, but I will take my hat off to them for doing some very good pricing at times.

To be fair, over the weekend I had an epiphany and thought: "hey! I need a D700 and a 14-24mm" so when I've sold my kidney, I will be haggling my little buttocks off before I part with the best part of three grand now I've realised a D3s and that glass is tooooo much to spend....

We have Jessops, Jacobs and LCE within about 500 meters of each other. :D

Oh no don't mention a D3s. That's a very dangerous thought for me to be having! :D:thumbs:

Buying a Jessops-own UV filter seems a big ask at the moment, such are my finances..... I need a monster commission!!!!!

Dont seem to have any luck haggling with jessops, wont knock anything off when i've tried. Got a better chance in a smaller "family run" type camera shop tbh. But then, their prices are generally higher anyway.

I tried haggling with jessops for a reduction off my first camera, took in an advert showing I could get it £50 cheaper and asked them to match. They said no so I left with the money and got it matched by comet of all places.
Didn't even entertain jessops when I upgraded.
