Hiya,

A customer of mine brought a disc of their images that they purchased to Tesco and were told that they could not print them as they did not own copyright. The customer has asked me for some form of proof that they have purchased the disc and have my permission to print the images.

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a standard form I should be issuing with all my disc sales?

Any advice gratefully received...
 
This is to protect tesco, several high street printers are doing this. I am just doing photography for a hobby and i took some prom images for my cousin. When she went to have them printed she came back to me with the same thing. I just printed a letter naming her as having copyright and was fine to have them printed and i printed my phone number so they could contact me, along with my address. This just covers everyone. Its a good thing really.
 
We don't do many jobs that include digital images but when we do, we print on the disc, the clients name and that they have been granted licence to make prints but the copyright remains with us & our contact details.

I also provide them with a letter to back this up and it clearly states that we do not accept any resposibility for the quality of prints not provided by ourselves.

Can't the people just copy the images onto another disc and then take them in to be printed, or, copy to an SDHC card and do it that way?

The problem there is if the shop thinks you have copied professional images (and don't think you are THE professional) there is a risk they will refuse to print them.

EDIT: FWIW, I tell all disc clients to make a copy the one I provide, because the resposibility for permanent archival is passed to them. This is also on the letter supllied with the disc.

Don't give them copyright, give them a right to reproduce or print the images for their own use (theres a big difference) include a headed letter saying something to that effect. A text file might work but some places can't open them so I find a letter better.
 
If the pics are of them and they want them printed, why not give them copyright?

'cause if you give them copyright you're (amongst other things) stopping yourself using the images for any future advertising
 
I would suggest give them print with the CD - to show how well they should be priunted - so if they complain about the print quality from wherever they have used, you can say - well my print was perfect.... so it must be them!
