High pass sharpening

That is a very clear description, Dan and I have saved it try (Hope I can use it with PSE7). Only thing that troubles me is that I struggle to see a difference between your Before and After shots. (Perhaps my eyesight is at fault).
Thanks for posting that. PP is not my strongpoint and I am always looking for pointers.

Nice one, however is there a difference from doing it your way to just...

Duplicating the layer > Filter > High Pass?

If you open both images on seperate windows and flick between them you should see the biggest difference around the head area. You wont be able to tell at the reduced size.

In effect it is the same process, however you may notice a change in colour/contrast doing it like that.

I like to use smart layers because of thier flexability.

cheers for your comments.

Saved to try later

You are right, Dan. Sorry for that.

Nice easy to read and follow tutorial....thanks for your time and effort.
I've not heard of changing the blending mode to Luminosity before - is this because you have used Smart Objects - or would you make this change anyway.
Also please, I have seen a tutorial where it suggests that you carry out high pass sharpening at 100% crop, what do you think??

The smart object layer is used so two blending modes can be applied to the same layer, luminosity to the layer to prevent a colour change when applying the high pass filter, and overlay to the filter.

Yes its always a good idea to zoom to 100% to see the effects of the sharpen, I forgot to put this into the tutorial. I'll add it now.

cheers.
