high pass filter help

Hi guys/gals.
I've been looking for inspiration for some self portrait shots lately and have come across a few shots that have used photoshops high pass filter.

So I've got a shot that I like and would like to use this efffect on it, but don't actually know what I'm supposed to do with it once I've pushed the high pass filter button, it leaves the picture with a grey screen with loads of highlights.

Any ideas? Thanks

Change the layer blend mode too soft light

soft light or hard light, play around with different blend modes to see what they do.. there are little differences

Also, try desaturating the layer before applying the high pass.

thanks for all your help and advice guys, did a few shots and they're up on my flickr page, not over the top processing, but enough to make the picture pop.
