High lights and low lights!

Can anyone explain? I'm doing a photography course and I'm ill the evening they talk and learn about this! And apparently there's not time to discuss it! Anyone got any tips? Or good websites? Or how u do this? Mostly interested in high lights xx

In simple terms, highlights are the bright areas of the image, and low lights are the dark areas.
