I have a decent set of lights, I have a white large dackdrop and train.

I am looking to try some kids portraits with a cousins kids, what I cant seem to find on here is a technique on what is the correct way to achieve it.

searches produce every post with "high" and "key"....lol

If anyone has a tried and tested setup please let me know..lol

Do you mean the Venture look? That is a large white background with plenty of light on it.

Background brighter than the front light so it blows pure white (but don't over do it - half a stop is enough) and the extra wide background provides loads of fill and shine on the sides of faces.

TBH I think the Venture technique is basically lots of big soft lights everywhere, and over exposure the background a bit.

Have not heard of the venture look, but will look into it, what I am after is the white background, really bright and with nicely exposed kids in the front.
sounds what you are describing.

You may not be able to find what you're looking for because the correct search term is 'White background' High key is something entirely different, and doesn't have to include a white background.

Hi Garry,

Many thanks for that, I was finding a few bits on the net, but the search wasnt good on here.
I appreciate the guides, its made things a little clearer, but I dont have a light meter at the moment, but I am going to have aplay tomorrow and just adjust as needed and see what we get.
As I have only the 2 lights I can only use one to light the background, but we will see what we get with what I have...lol

Cheers

Venture is a national portrait studio franchise, specialising in highly stylised family pictures http://www.thisisventure.co.uk/images.aspx?cat=4

You can have a pretty good go at it with two lights. Big soft mainlight with brolly or softbox, reflector on the other side to lighten the shadows, second light on a white background set to fractional over exposure so that it blows to pure white.

A flash meter makes balancing the lights easier, but you can do it with trial and error by checking the LCD and histogram. Basically, set your front light then turn up the background light until it blows to white - but only just white, don't blitz it or it eats away at the edges of the main subject.

Then cut the image into three sections, mount them all side by side on big canvas wrap frames, and charge two grand ;)

lol......oh how I wish !!!!!
I could then afford to go and get my 5Dmk2 and some more L glass...oh yes and a flash meter
I am going to have a stab at it in the morning so I will see what I get.

I have had some good advice on this subject, so thanks to all who have helped
