Hi

Sorry if this has been done to death but i wanted to see what people thought is the best thing currently as a pocket size p&s?

Have about £500 to spend so the Leica d-lux 5 is something i'd seen and read good things about, any opinions on this? Basically there are times when having to lug my 5dmk2 plus lenses around is a pain, so want a small option but that still packs a punch. Think the canon g12 will be too bulky.

Would be processing as raws most of the time.

Thanks!

The Leica D-Lux 5 is a mildly fiddled with Panny LX5 so save your money and buy the LX5. If you must have a red dot - paint one on.

Anyway... I have a LX5 and it's ok. It has a nice lens and a reasonable aperture and zoom range, widish at the wide end, and is much better than my Canon Ixus but not as good as my GF1. So it's sort of a middle ground really, IMVHO, better than many a true compact but not as good as a micro four thirds.

Canon G12....Fabulous camera if you can live with the terrible external finish.

Failing that LX5

Skip the red dot, buy the LX5 at £332 on Amazon (The seller is 'good_deal4you'.) and trouser the other £168!

The LX3 was way ahead of it's time and the LX5 is better! Brilliant raw and superb macro pics! You will not be sorry!

Well after trying a few, I just love the new Nikon P7100 (yes the G12 clone). Brilliant image quality, full feature set and a superb stabilised 28-200 tack sharp lens (and still takes all my speedlights and CLS triggers).

In real terms the LX5 is not really that much smaller than a G12 or P7100 is it?

An LX5 doesn't fit comfortably in a trouser pocket and I can't imagine an X10 would. If bulk is the main concern the S100 would be the answer.

The Olympus XZ-1 is a very capable camera with a faster lens than the others suggested. It is marginally larger than the LX5 but if bulk is the issue, I would consider the S95.

I would recommend the Canon S95, compact and produce great results.

Canon S95/S100 for a truly pocketable camera no contest. it's also small enough to attach to backpack straps or my belt so it's always at hand even if you put it in a small case.

Yeah, Canon S90 / 95 / 100 look really like a good choice, I do not own them, but if I had to buy a high end pocket camera I would pick one of them (I have read loads of reviews and comparisons). If you wanna save some money just go with the S90!

Yes, it is!

Sorry, just going by real world experience having owned one (realise that is not a common approach to internet debate :) )

It was not comfortable in my jacket pocket and I could always feel it was there (size and weight). Whereas an S95 being only 5mm wider than an IXUS 220 I would imagine would be a different story. I can carry an IXUS 220 and a Blackberry in one jeans pocket as a comparison.

As was I, but it's difficult to relay the difference in size online without referring to a photo...
