High Dynamic Range - On or Off

I'm using my 2020 MacBook Pro 13" with a Benq 27" 4K display - I'm just wondering when processing photos should I have this feature on or off? Also I'm guessing I should have 'True Tone' turned off for the MacBook's Retina display?

I use a SpyderXPro to calibrate my displays and always thought that my Benq was dimmer than my MacBook Pro display even after calibration (with High Dynamic Range turned on)
 
I would turn all the 'bells and whistles' off when processing and when calibrating. HDR is really intended as a gaming/movie mode to compensate for lack of dynamic range in the monitor.

In apple terminology it may have a slightly different meaning. I would in the first instance try to match this with a similar settings on monitor osd menu.
I have seen one benq on a recent Mac that showed absolutely nonsense till HDR was ticked. That's why I'm saying this
