ok i am after some advice any opinions please i recently was at a hide and have realised it could be quite handy with the sigma 150-600 and no room really for my tripod
any recommendations please
not sure if it matters but the tripod i have is a velbon sherpa 250R

Personally I like using a monopod in a hide (currently an induro am25) it's solid with my 200-500 but keeps the freedom to move about) it obviously also has many more uses than a hide clamp too.

Never heard of a hide clamp but the one thing that struck me was is it more useful with a monopod than a tripod??? Or is it intended to be used with two tripod legs extended for lateral tension and the clamp 'locks' into a solid position?

I've thought about a hide clamp but I'd be a bit concerned about how secure it was (same lens as the OP). Also some hides don't have shelves in the right place and of the right type to attach a clamp to. I just use a bean bag, although obviously it's harder to track a moving subject, although it can be done successfully. It's also easy to switch to hand held for BIF of course. Hide clamps are very useful for scopes, but they're lighter than a long lens.

I use one of these

However, you are relying on the shelf being the right height for your set up. I have a couple of extension pieces to adjust the height.

You need a fairly rigid shelf. It works very well once it's tightened down and I have no worries about putting my 500 on it.

Other than that I take a big bean bag.

I guess the clamps that take a column would probably be the most versatile.

Another beanbag user here, some hides don't have shelves and those that do they can be quite unstable for a large lens.

The clamp fits on the cente column. So when carrying and using the tripod normally, it fits under the apex bracket (or whatever its correct name is). In the hide, slide it off the bottom, take the centre column out, refit the clamp and then attach it to the shelf. Works better in some hides than others and is very handy even essential for use with a scope, especially if sharing the scope with others.
