Bad cameras are exceedingly rare, you'll get on fine.

Which is fortunate because buying and then asking advice isn't the best way round.

I would agree with this wholeheartedly. If you go with the main manufacturers it is actually quite difficult to buy a bad camera these days. Most will produce excellent photos and are primarily limited by the user's capability rather than the camera's specification.
