Hi

I am lucky to have a DSLR (Nikon D5000) for my work, but day to day for about 3 years (only recently changed from a D70 which packed up :shake: on which i took about 30k picutres) I was just using "point and shoot mode" .

I decided towards the end of last year that since I took so many photographs that using the camera outside of work would be a good idea and equally help to make me better at taking photos at work.

So I am new to photograph, but only as a hobby.

Please be kind, but I welcome your opinions as I look to improve my technique.

What field are you in?
Are you going to branch out with your hobby?
If you ask for it you will recieve some really good critque on your posts.
The other thing is to watch what other members are posting and ask questions if you like to know how they created a particular image or what technic was used.

I'm a scientist and no professional when it come to photography

I am looking to make photography a bit of a hobby as my work photography isn't at all creative (Forensic, but no bodies Phew !!! ).

Heck until only recently I stuck rigidly to "auto mode" and although at times it has it's place (quick and dirty) I now prefer Programme mode for day to day use.

I will be posting some photos soon, hopefully some shots I have taken this weekend as I am going to a days photography course.

I'm a newbie myself, but i made the promise when i bought my camera that i would never rely on auto mode...
its a bit like making your own hair rigs (if you fish) the sense of achievement is far greater knowing you had a lot of input into making it happen.

I know what you mean, but unfortunately most the times at work recording the image is more important than technique. Sometimes I need to move quickly to ensure I don't miss things and I just don't have time to consider all the variables, when auto mode does it for me.

That said I now reguarly use Programme mode and that gives me some choice over the settings. Hopefully by using the camera more outside work i will be more confident with it and start using A and S modes more.
